It can also automatically update credentials on supported websites when a saved password is compromised. Now, the platform appears to be taking this automated process a step ahead with the help of Gemini AI. It is testing a new tool that can change weak or reused passwords in your password manager.

Google Chrome could let Gemini change passwords for you

Keeping track of dozens of online accounts is difficult enough, but keeping every password unique and secure can be even more challenging. Google aims to use Gemini to make things easier for you. Instead of simply warning you about an insecure password and sending you to a website to change it yourself, Chrome could let Gemini take care of the process.

First spotted by Leopeva64 in the latest Chrome Canary build, Google is currently experimenting with an AI-powered option that can handle the password-changing process on your behalf. The user could enable the experimental flag, unlocking the hidden feature. Once enabled, Chrome replaces the usual external “Change password” button with a more prominent “Change it for me” option featuring Gemini.

🎁 SammyGuru Rewards

Get a free Mystery Box with your next Galaxy

Join SammyGuru Rewards — free. Instead of opening the website, finding its account settings, locating the password section, and going through the process yourself, Gemini would attempt to complete those steps for you. Google has likely built the feature on top of the existing automated password-changing functionality for compromised websites.

For this feature to be useful, Google would need to ensure that Gemini can safely navigate password-change pages without accidentally changing the wrong account, exposing credentials, or getting confused by unusual authentication flows. Google would also need to be extremely careful about how Chrome stores the newly generated passwords.

There’s also the question of two-factor authentication, which could be a challenge. Even if Gemini can navigate to the right page and enter the necessary information, many websites require a one-time code, security key, or another form of verification before allowing a password change. But if Google can get this right, the feature could solve one of the biggest practical problems with password security.

Expect more details to emerge in the coming months as the company tests and further develops the tool.

Written by

Sobha Upadhyaya

Sobha is a tech enthusiast who can never seem to stick to one phone ecosystem for too long. She hopes device ecosystems become truly interoperable someday, so switching between platforms doesn’t mean having to give up features or worry about compatibility.

SammyGuru has affiliate and sponsored partnerships, we may earn a commission.
