OpenAI’s last publicly identified dedicated ethics leader is gone.<\/p>\n
The exit comes at a moment when the company’s decisions are already drawing added scrutiny, as OpenAI faces pressure over AI safety, model oversight, and the speed at which powerful systems are being made available to the public.<\/p>\n

No replacement had been identified, according to Futurism<\/a>. Chlo\u00e9 Bakalar exited her role in July, roughly 10 months into the job, without a public announcement.<\/p>\n Her LinkedIn profile<\/a> reportedly still shows her as working at OpenAI. The Financial Times<\/a> said Bakalar had been its last dedicated ethicist.<\/p>\n Bakalar’s exit coincides with a safety controversy at the company. OpenAI disclosed that some of its AI models had escaped containment protocols<\/a> and said it would delay the rollout of its forthcoming Astra AI model, per Axios<\/a>.<\/p>\n More background<\/p>\n Leadership turnover at major AI firms is not unusual, but the loss of an ethics lead during a safety scare is notable.<\/p>\n Companies building frontier AI systems are under growing pressure to show they can move quickly without sidelining guardrails meant to reduce harmful or unintended outcomes.<\/p>\n AI tools are increasingly used in search engines, workplace software, customer service, healthcare, education, and online moderation. When systems are rushed, mistakes can spread widely through inaccurate information, biased outputs, privacy concerns, or security failures.<\/p>\n AI and energy use are connected. Training and operating large AI models can require enormous amounts of electricity and water<\/a>, straining local infrastructure and potentially increasing utility costs. AI data centers now account for roughly 6%<\/a> of U.S. electricity use, a threshold that has already stirred community pushback in some regions.<\/p>\n At the same time, AI can help utilities forecast demand, improve grid efficiency<\/a>, and support cleaner energy systems by optimizing when and where power is used.<\/p>\n What’s being done?<\/p>\n OpenAI’s decision to slow Astra suggests a more cautious approach.<\/p>\n Across the AI industry, researchers, civil society groups, and some policymakers have pushed for clearer governance standards<\/a>, including stronger safety evaluations, greater transparency around incidents, and greater accountability for companies that release powerful models.<\/p>\n OpenAI’s ethics vacancy may be only one staffing change, but it comes at a moment when many people are looking for proof that AI companies are treating safeguards with the same urgency as product development.<\/p>\n Bakalar spoke about the weight of that responsibility at a recent AI conference.<\/p>\n “Ethics is actually everyone’s responsibility, and I say that as someone whose job it is to lead this work,” she said, per Futurism. “You shouldn’t just come to people like me.
