(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbrc.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WBRC<\/a>) &#8211; Even as AI becomes increasingly common in health care, doctors say patients shouldn\u2019t rely on it to diagnose themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text text-start\">Dr. Amit Momaya, an orthopedic surgeon at UAB Hospital, told WBRC\u2019s Russell Jones Saturday that they just don\u2019t know how accurate AI is because it\u2019s still so new.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text text-start\">That doesn\u2019t mean it can\u2019t be a good tool, though.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text text-start\">\u201cIt can be great to figure out a list of questions to ask your healthcare provider or provide a second opinion or upload a report, say, perhaps, \u2018Who should I seek out to help me treat this?\u2019\u201d Momaya said. \u201cI think patients should not use it as a primary source, but maybe to augment their health care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text text-start\">It\u2019s not just patients that can benefit from AI\u2019s growing capabilities, according to Momaya, who said he is in favor of having it in his own office for a number of reasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text text-start\">\u201cSo AI traditionally, right now, in our practice is used for scribing to give us more time with the patient,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re not replacing the diagnoses with AI or anything like that, but I think in the future it will help augment us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text text-start\">By helping transcribe notes, doctors are able to spend more face-to-face time with patients, getting back to the elements, as Momaya called it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text text-start\">As its capabilities continue to grow, he believes AI will be more valuable to doctors as they look for the best possible treatment options.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text text-start\">\u201cWhen a radiologist, for example, looks at a scan, can AI help us alert a unique case where there may be cancer that could be missed otherwise?\u201d he said. \u201cIt helps augment and support us and make sure we don\u2019t miss anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text text-start\">As long as there are safeguards and it is used appropriately, Momaya believes AI could continue to be used in new ways in the health care field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text text-start\">Get news alerts in the <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/wbrc-fox6-news\/id449660326\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apple App Store<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.raycom.wbrc&amp;hl=en_US&amp;gl=US\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Google Play Store<\/a> or subscribe to our email newsletter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbrc.com\/newsletter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WBRC.
