(NewsNation<\/a>) \u2014 Google<\/a> plans to acquire data from Spirit Airlines to improve its product and artificial intelligence models, according to a bankruptcy court filing<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The tech giant won a bankruptcy auction for the airline’s business data<\/a>, agreeing to pay $10 million for the information. The deal includes roughly 10 million emails and 500 million Microsoft Teams chats, as well as other documents, spreadsheets, calendars and other internal company data, according to the court filing. <\/p>\n

Spirit ended operations<\/a> earlier this year after failing to emerge from its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy<\/a>. Attorneys continue to oversee the airline’s remaining assets. <\/p>\n

The data reportedly includes marketing material, human resources information, project management documents, financial databases, audits and presentations. It doesn’t include passenger profiles or frequent flyer information. <\/p>\n

According to a separate court filing<\/a>, the data will be deidentified, meaning it won’t be associated with individual users, and the buyer will agree not to attempt to re-identify them. <\/p>\n

Google told Axios<\/a> the dataset will be scrubbed of personally identifiable information by a third party before the company receives it. <\/p>\n

“We acquired part of an enterprise dataset from Spirit Airlines, which can be helpful in improving our products and AI models,” a Google spokesperson told Axios. “We will not receive any personal information from this dataset.” <\/p>\n

Google is expected to use the information to help train large language models and improve its AI products. <\/p>\n

A federal judge must still approve the deal. If the sale is not approved, AI-powered hiring platform Mercor was the next-highest bidder, offering $7.5 million, according to Axios. <\/p>\n
