{"id":144657,"date":"2026-08-19T08:57:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T08:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/144657\/"},"modified":"2026-08-19T08:57:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T08:57:10","slug":"ai-in-the-gulf-has-a-drinking-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/144657\/","title":{"rendered":"AI in the Gulf Has a Drinking Problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Gulf didn\u2019t wait for artificial intelligence to hit the mainstream before it began betting big.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Six Gulf nations \u2013 Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman had already <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/mei.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Soliman-AI-Primer.pdf\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/mei.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Soliman-AI-Primer.pdf&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/mei.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Soliman-AI-Primer.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">begun building the policies<\/a>, institutions and infrastructure to make AI part of their economic future, with some of those efforts dating back to 2010.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Now, those early bets are turning into a multibillion-dollar race to build the data centres, talent and computing power needed to make the region a serious contender in the global market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">At the front of the AI race, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are going head-to-head. Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund (PIF), the kingdom\u2019s sovereign wealth fund strapped with more than $900 billion in assets, has already committed over <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/mei.edu\/publication\/saudi-arabias-ai-ambition-and-what-it-means-united-states\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/mei.edu\/publication\/saudi-arabias-ai-ambition-and-what-it-means-united-states\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/mei.edu\/publication\/saudi-arabias-ai-ambition-and-what-it-means-united-states\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$40 billion to AI-related ventures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">At the centre of that push is Humain, a flagship platform designed to build out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/trump-middle-east-artificial-intelligence-investments\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">country\u2019s AI infrastructure<\/a>. The UAE, which is leading in AI spending, allocated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.me\/story\/the-middle-easts-ai-spending-is-becoming-a-two-horse-race\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$355 million to AI hardware in 2025 alone<\/a>, and that figure is expected to reach $892 million by 2029.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe drive comes from a simple recognition: oil alone can\u2019t sustain long-term economic growth of the Gulf states,\u201d says <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/mei.edu\/person\/mohammed-soliman\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/mei.edu\/person\/mohammed-soliman\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/mei.edu\/person\/mohammed-soliman\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mohammed Soliman<\/a>, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute and author of West Asia: A New American Grand Strategy in the Middle East, about the reason behind the Gulf investing so heavily in becoming an AI powerhouse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThey\u2019re converting surplus capital, land and, above all, cheap energy into the scarce resource of this era, which is compute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Desert Thermal Trap<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While the region has impressive ambitions, it also has a resource problem. All GCC countries face <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/mei.edu\/publication\/gulfs-water-crisis-why-cooperation-crucial-and-complicated\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/mei.edu\/publication\/gulfs-water-crisis-why-cooperation-crucial-and-complicated\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/mei.edu\/publication\/gulfs-water-crisis-why-cooperation-crucial-and-complicated\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">severe water insecurity<\/a> and rely heavily on energy-intensive desalination to meet basic water needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/the-future-of-data-centers\/\" class=\"text link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI data centres<\/a> anywhere in the world pack thousands of GPUs into dense server racks, which generate intense heat as they process workloads. Keeping equipment from overheating requires constant cooling. Most large data centres use chilled-water systems and refrigeration towers, or air cooling that relies on evaporative technologies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In the Gulf, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/mecouncil.org\/publication\/gulf-ai-data-centers-water-energy\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/mecouncil.org\/publication\/gulf-ai-data-centers-water-energy\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/mecouncil.org\/publication\/gulf-ai-data-centers-water-energy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">that job is much harder<\/a>. As their power demand climbs across the region, so does the pressure on water supplies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A Middle East Institute report estimates that the UAE\u2019s AI sector alone could require roughly <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/mecouncil.org\/publication\/gulf-ai-data-centers-water-energy\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/mecouncil.org\/publication\/gulf-ai-data-centers-water-energy\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/mecouncil.org\/publication\/gulf-ai-data-centers-water-energy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">61 billion litres of water a year by 2030<\/a>, while Saudi Arabia\u2019s data centre power demand is expected to grow by 29% annually.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Climate researchers have raised alarm bells. The Environmental and Energy Study Institute in Washington, DC has found that data centres can consume up to <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.eesi.org\/articles\/view\/data-centers-and-water-consumption\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.eesi.org\/articles\/view\/data-centers-and-water-consumption&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eesi.org\/articles\/view\/data-centers-and-water-consumption\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">5 million gallons of water per day<\/a>, which is roughly equivalent to the water use of a town populated by up to 50,000 people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Gulf didn\u2019t wait for artificial intelligence to hit the mainstream before it began betting big.
