Global network security company Fortinet (FTNT) announced on the 19th (local time) that it has acquired Virtue AI, a startup with AI runtime protection, automated AI validation, and AI agent security technologies. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.<\/p>\n
Founded in 2024, Virtue AI is a privately held security company headquartered in San Francisco, specializing in diagnosing security vulnerabilities in autonomous AI systems and defending against them in real time. The acquisition is being interpreted as a strategic move by Fortinet to expand beyond its existing AI security portfolio into “Agentic AI” security.<\/p>\n
Fortinet founder and CEO Ken Xie said, “As AI fundamentally changes how enterprises operate, security must evolve at the speed of AI,” adding, “With Virtue AI’s technology, we will help customers securely manage their AI systems across the entire lifecycle while operating at enterprise scale.”<\/p>\n
Responding to the Expanding AI Attack Surface<\/p>\n
As enterprises rapidly adopt AI applications and autonomous agents, the attack surface is expanding beyond networks, users, endpoints, applications, and cloud to include prompts, models, agents, MCP (Model Context Protocol) tools, API calls, and AI infrastructure. This has created a challenge for enterprises to ensure secure operations even as they adopt AI.<\/p>\n
Fortinet has been protecting large language models (LLMs) used by enterprises from AI-specific threats such as prompt injection, data leakage, and model poisoning with its “FortiAIGate,” launched earlier this year. With the Virtue AI acquisition, Fortinet is extending its security coverage from the development stage of AI models, applications, and agents through to actual operational deployment.<\/p>\n
Virtue AI’s core technology can be summarized in four key areas. First, red-teaming capabilities that proactively diagnose AI agent vulnerabilities across more than 50 virtual environments and 14 high-risk domains. Second, agent protection and governance that detects unauthorized AI tools and preemptively blocks malicious command execution. Third, continuous validation that automatically checks for new risks whenever model updates or policy changes occur, generating audit-ready evidence. Fourth, real-time defense that applies security policies to diverse content\u2014from text to images and video\u2014to prevent sensitive information exposure, AI jailbreak attempts, and vulnerable code leakage.<\/p>\n
The automated diagnostic system covers hundreds of attack types and more than 1,000 risk items, with security personnel able to review assessment results on demand, the company explained.<\/p>\n
AI Security Market Growth and Fortinet’s Strategy<\/p>\n
According to market research firm Gartner, the AI ecosystem and AI agent security market is projected to grow from $2.8 billion (approximately 3.9 trillion won) in 2026 to $16.4 billion (approximately 22.9 trillion won) by 2030\u2014a high-growth segment with a compound annual growth rate exceeding 50%.<\/p>\n
Fortinet already provides customers with its “AI-Native Security Fabric,” which delivers integrated protection across networks, endpoints, cloud, applications, and AI systems. With this acquisition, the company plans to complement FortiAIGate and further strengthen its security capabilities for the AI operational phase.<\/p>\n
Fortinet expects Virtue AI’s automated validation and real-time defense technologies to work in complementary fashion with FortiAIGate.
