In an August 19 <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/offering-zero-data-retention-for-frontier-models\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announcement, OpenAI introduced Private Safety Processing<\/a>, a system designed to detect suspicious behavior across multiple interactions while preserving ZDR for eligible API customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI says its existing ZDR safeguards evaluate requests individually, making patterns spread across several interactions harder to detect. Private Safety Processing is supposed to fill that gap without giving OpenAI employees access to the underlying prompts or responses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, the system is being tested with early customers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/08\/19\/openai-previews-zero-retention-safety-system-as-anthropic-requires-data-logs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Axios reports<\/a> that it\u2019s aimed at enterprise and API customers rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/computing\/how-to-delete-chat-history-chatgpt\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">individual ChatGPT subscribers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1200\" data-wp-class--hide=\"state.isContentHidden\" data-wp-class--show=\"state.isContentVisible\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.showLightbox\" data-wp-on--load=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on--pointerdown=\"actions.preloadImage\" data-wp-on--pointerenter=\"actions.preloadImageWithDelay\" data-wp-on--pointerleave=\"actions.cancelPreload\" data-wp-on-window--resize=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ChatGpt-on-iPhone.jpg\" alt=\"ChatGPT on iPhone\" class=\"wp-image-5992749\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>\t\tRachit Agarwal \/ Digital Trends<\/p>\n<p>How does Private Safety Processing work<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of inspecting one request at a time, the system can look for suspicious patterns across related interactions. When it detects possible misuse, OpenAI receives a limited signal about the activity rather than the customer\u2019s underlying content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With Zero Data Retention deployments, that content stays on infrastructure controlled by the customer. OpenAI is also developing another setup where encrypted content can live on its infrastructure while customers hold the encryption keys. OpenAI itself wouldn\u2019t possess those keys.<\/p>\n<p>Why Anthropic chose another route<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropic has made a different tradeoff. For its Covered Models, prompts and outputs are retained for 30 days, including for organizations that previously used Zero Data Retention. <a href=\"https:\/\/support.claude.com\/en\/articles\/15425996-data-retention-practices-for-covered-models\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthropic says<\/a> that window helps its safeguards catch attacks that only become apparent across multiple requests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI is trying to solve the same safety problem while keeping ZDR intact for eligible customers. For businesses that adopted ZDR specifically to limit how long an AI provider can hold their content, those are materially different propositions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" data-wp-class--hide=\"state.isContentHidden\" data-wp-class--show=\"state.isContentVisible\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.showLightbox\" data-wp-on--load=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on--pointerdown=\"actions.preloadImage\" data-wp-on--pointerenter=\"actions.preloadImageWithDelay\" data-wp-on--pointerleave=\"actions.cancelPreload\" data-wp-on-window--resize=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/aerps-com-_c9iPLn7emA-unsplash-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Electronics, Mobile Phone, Phone\" class=\"wp-image-5962923\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>\t\tAerps.com \/ Unsplash<\/p>\n<p>What zero retention still leaves out<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Private Safety Processing is still an early preview, and OpenAI hasn\u2019t yet publicly demonstrated that it can provide abuse detection equivalent to approaches that retain customer content. The technical details behind those privacy protections also aren\u2019t public yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s an explicit exception. <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/offering-zero-data-retention-for-frontier-models\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OpenAI says<\/a> images flagged as potential child sexual abuse material can still be retained for legally required manual review and reporting, even under Zero Data Retention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI plans to begin rolling out Private Safety Processing and publish a technical white paper in September.
