(WCSC) — The Charleston County School District has created a Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen-AI) Resource Hub on its website to give students, families and educators a centralized place to learn about the district’s approach to AI.

The district said artificial intelligence platforms and resources are transforming education, and it is developing policies and resources to build the community’s AI literacy.

The online resource hub lists district policy, initiatives and the district’s expectations for how AI should be used in the classroom.

Policy built on S-E-E framework

Deputy Superintendent Luke Clamp said the district developed its AI policy using what the district calls the SEE framework.

“S-E-E. Is it safe? Is it ethical? And is it effective?” Clamp said.

“So any tool that we might use or may make available to our staff or our students, we’re going to take it through that frame. As well as giving parents education about the questions they should be asking their students if they’re being given activities or assignments to do,” Clamp said.

“And when it’s appropriate to use generative AI and when it’s not appropriate. So that parents can be engaged. And that’s, above all, that’s what we want. We want our parents to be engaged and have thoughtful questions as they support their students in their learning,” Clamp said.

Guidance group set data protection as priority

A guidance group of students, staff and community members worked together to create the guidelines for what AI can create and when.

“Yes. Well, first and foremost is, are we protecting our students’ data? And are we protecting all of their intellectual property as we might engage and use any resource and technology? And we can say yes,” Clamp said.

“Our students’ data and the information that they’ll create, we absolutely will protect that. Because for students, their concern is about the integrity of what they’re creating, what they have access to, and then more specifically, how they will be assessed on any piece of information they create,” Clamp said.

District piloting Magic School tool

Clamp was asked whether the policy applies to all available AI tools, including Midjourney, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Claude.

“So Charleston County has begun a one-year pilot with a pedagogical tool called Magic School. And this tool allows for, first with teacher use only, the integration of generative AI in supporting teachers as they develop instruction and support students. There are free versions of tools that are out there that we know students and staff have access to, but only Magic School is approved to be used by staff in creating pedagogical resources,” Clamp said.

The district said Generative AI will not replace teachers in the classroom and is only a tool meant to enhance the process. The district will also provide teacher training and professional development on using AI in the classroom.
