OpenAI on Thursday rolled out a plug-in that lets ChatGPT control Apple’s Messages app on the Mac. The feature can read, draft and send texts on a user’s behalf, search through conversation history, and summarize threads. Bloomberg<\/a>, which first reported the launch, noted that an OpenAI tool touching iMessage data “is likely to spark questions” for a company that has built its consumer identity around privacy.<\/p>\n

For marketers, this is more than a product update in the AI arms race. It is a live experiment in what happens when one company’s flagship feature collides with another company’s flagship brand promise.<\/p>\n

What the feature actually does<\/p>\n

The integration is available in the ChatGPT desktop app for Mac, including ChatGPT Work and Codex. Once connected, ChatGPT can pull up recent conversations, answer questions about what’s in them, and compose and send replies as the user.<\/p>\n

OpenAI, responding to privacy questions from Bloomberg<\/a>, said the plug-in runs locally on the machine, relies on existing macOS tools such as AppleScript and Accessibility, and does not build an index of a user’s full message history. Setup is deliberately friction-heavy: users click through opt-in screens in both the ChatGPT app and macOS System Settings, grant Full Disk Access, and approve contacts and automation permissions.<\/p>\n

There is one guardrail worth watching. By default, ChatGPT asks for approval before each send. Users can switch on “persistent approval” to skip that step \u2014 a setting OpenAI itself discourages<\/a>, since it removes the last human check before an AI texts your contacts in your name.<\/p>\n

The timing is combustible<\/p>\n

The launch lands weeks after Apple sued OpenAI<\/a>, alleging theft of trade secrets and confidential information about upcoming products. It also arrives ahead of Apple’s revamped Siri, which is expected to search users’ messages and on-device content<\/a> \u2014 a capability widely framed as Apple’s edge over third-party chatbots.<\/p>\n

Apple has a history of protecting the iMessage perimeter. When Beeper Mini brought iMessage to Android<\/a>, Apple shut it down within days. Whether Cupertino responds the same way to a plug-in built on its own sanctioned automation tools is an open question \u2014 AppleScript and Accessibility are documented parts of macOS, not exploits.<\/p>\n

Apple did not respond to Bloomberg’s request for comment<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The marketing lens: privacy as a brand asset under stress<\/p>\n

Apple has spent more than a decade converting privacy from a compliance topic into a marketing category. “What happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone” was a billboard, not a policy document. That positioning has real commercial value \u2014 it justifies premium pricing, differentiates against ad-funded rivals, and gives Apple moral standing in every platform dispute.<\/p>\n

The ChatGPT plug-in tests that asset in a way Apple didn’t choose. If Apple blocks the integration, critics will read it as protecting Siri from competition rather than protecting users \u2014 the same accusation that followed the Beeper Mini shutdown. If Apple allows it, the most private surface on the Mac becomes readable by a third-party AI, with Apple’s implicit tolerance. Either move carries brand cost. That is the uncomfortable position a competitor can put you in when your marketing promise is also your product architecture.<\/p>\n

The inbox is the next contested surface<\/p>\n

There’s a second story here for anyone who sends messages to consumers for a living. The messaging inbox \u2014 texts, DMs, email \u2014 is becoming the surface where AI assistants prove their usefulness. Summarize my threads. Tell me what needs a reply. Answer this one for me.<\/p>\n

Once an AI layer sits between a message and its reader, the rules of attention change. A promotional text that a human might skim gets compressed into a one-line summary, or filtered out of the “needs attention” pile entirely. Marketers spent the last decade optimizing for inbox placement and preview text. The next optimization target may be how a message survives an AI’s triage \u2014 whether an assistant judges it worth surfacing at all.<\/p>\n

That shift won’t be decided by this one plug-in. But the direction is consistent across the industry: assistants are moving from answering questions to operating communication channels. Whoever’s AI reads the inbox effectively owns the attention that flows through it.<\/p>\n

The wider look<\/p>\n

Every major AI company is racing to become the layer through which people manage their digital lives \u2014 and messaging is the stickiest surface of all. OpenAI reaching into iMessage, without Apple’s blessing and mid-lawsuit, shows how contested that territory has become. For Apple, the challenge is defending a privacy brand without looking like it’s defending a Siri monopoly.
