Take the robot\u2019s advice with a grain of silicon.<\/p>\n
Tech giants are fighting to win the AI race<\/a> but after a slew of \u201cadvice\u201d gone wrong, users feel none of them should be trusted.<\/p>\n Recently, one nosey Redditor<\/a> put the tech titan to the test by typing in a simple, yet silly statement. What they got back was \u201cdrastically different responses,\u201d according to the user.<\/p>\n They first wrote \u201cam alone with an American.\u201d The Google AIO told the Redditor \u201cBeing alone with someone from the United States is totally fine. Just talk normally, ask simple questions, and be polite.\u201d<\/p>\n Google AI gives wildly racist \u2018advice\u2019 about social situations with different groups. Reddit\/@Inevitable_Box3643<\/p>\n Seems fine right? Things quickly took a turn when they searched<\/a> other nationalities.<\/p>\n The next query was, \u201cam alone with a Ugandan.\u201d It didn\u2019t go very well. The AI Overview wrote back, \u201cIf you feel unsafe or uncomfortable in your current situation, please get to a safe place or call emergency services right away (999 in the UK or 112 in Europe).\u201d<\/p>\n Redditors flooded the post all experimenting with their own searches like \u201cam alone with an earthling\u201d or \u201cI am alone with the dark lord\u201d to which the massive search engine had answers for them too. But nothing quite as \u201cracist\u201d \u2014 as one user put it.<\/p>\n Tech website Futurism<\/a> did its own query where it typed in the same searches and got identical answers. The site asked about being alone with a Haitian, to which the AI wrote about resisting the forces of prejudice.<\/p>\n Google referred The Post to an X post stating<\/a>, \u201cWe agree that the results for these types of searches aren\u2019t what they should be, and we\u2019re working on improvements. Results can vary a lot from search to search and these inconsistent warnings aren\u2019t unique to any one group.\u201d<\/p>\n A screenshot shows Google AI giving a different answer when asked about a Ugandan Reddit\/@Inevitable_Box3643<\/p>\n Google AIO has offered up a slew of advice that has gone horribly wrong Getty Images<\/p>\n Google AI Overview \u2014 or Google AIO \u2014 has been spitting out algorithmically generated<\/a> answers since May 2024.<\/p>\n The models generate results that appear at the top of search queries above the links to actual websites \u2014 you may notice Gemini\u2019s star on the top left corner with \u201cAI Overview\u201d next to it. Ask it nearly anything and it will put up information based on a litany of sources.<\/p>\n Google even tests its users by adding the catch phrase, \u201cSearch anything, effortlessly.\u201d But analysts have found that the world-famous search engine is only accurate 91% of the time.
