Shares of Alphabet (GOOGL) (GOOG) closed down 4.03% that day. By the time the podcasts got to it, the arithmetic had already been done out loud. “Jeff Dean plus three other AI superstars are leaving Google to start a company called Discovery Loop,” Jason Calacanis said on the All-In podcast, taped Aug. 6. “Dean is a legend … Google shares down 4% on the news of Dean leaving. So, 200 billion in lost market cap if you want to correlate those two things.”

That last clause is doing more work than it looks like. Calacanis hedged it on air, and he was right to. Two things about this story do not fit the brain-drain reading, and the first one is in Sundar Pichai’s own memo.

        More News from Barchart

Sponsored Content: The ‘Nvidia of Energy’ has a $2.1T opportunity. It is buying a stake in what they do next and selling them the compute to do it on. Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation, says it is “developing advanced AI systems that leverage massive computational scale to fundamentally transform the speed and efficiency of innovation by automating complete experimental loops.” Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures co-led the round.

The other two departures are Oriol Vinyals, a senior research scientist at Google DeepMind, and Quoc Le, a founding member of Google Brain. Alphabet closed at $362.43 on Aug. 5, down from $377.65, on volume roughly 43% above its 20-day average. Against about 12.23 billion shares outstanding, that erases roughly $186 billion… a staggering sum.

    Story Continues

The move was genuinely Alphabet’s own: the Nasdaq Composite (NDAQ) fell 0.8% that session, the S&P 500 ($SPX) slipped 0.2%, and the Dow closed at a record. But a 4% down day is not rare for this stock. Alphabet has closed 4% or worse 12 times in the past two years, and four of those 12 landed in the last seven weeks alone. The stock had also rallied nearly 19% in the nine sessions into Aug. 5. Some of what came out was air that had just gone in. And Dean was not the only Google item on the tape: the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal rejected the company’s bid to block an opt-out class action over search advertising the same day.

Brain Drain or Just a Different Path?

There is a less comfortable reading available. Axios reported on July 23, citing half a dozen current and former Google DeepMind employees, that poor morale was contributing to delayed model releases, and followed up on Aug. 5 that “Google’s Gemini 3.5 Pro is months behind, with some company sources telling Axios that’s in part due to low morale.” That is anonymously sourced, and Google disputes it, saying AI attrition is lower than a year ago and that more than 90% of candidates offered an AI role accept.

The least dramatic explanation may be the most useful one, and it came from David Friedberg, a former Google employee, on the same podcast. If you are one of the great computer scientists, he argued, “and they’re allocating capital not to your models, not to the things that you’re most interested in, but they’re allocating capital to infrastructure and data centers … that might be a better path for me.” Alphabet’s own filings support the premise. The company spent $44.9 billion on property and equipment in the second quarter, roughly double a year earlier, and reported negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion, the first negative quarter on record. Money is moving from research to concrete, and it has tradable consequences that run straight through Nvidia (NVDA).

None of that settles whether the shakeup is a loss.
