But it still needs Microsoft\u2019s machines to keep the work moving.<\/p>\n<p>According to Bloomberg, Meta is now one of Microsoft\u2019s largest AI customers, spending hundreds of millions of dollars a year through Azure and consuming trillions of tokens each week. The company is using Microsoft\u2019s AI platform to access outside models and computing capacity, illustrating how even one of the industry\u2019s biggest AI investors cannot rely entirely on its own infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>And that dependency is becoming a business opportunity. The more companies spend on building and deploying AI, the more they need the computing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelinsider.com\/ai\/building-channel-revenue\/lyra-cloud-services-anthropic-ai-aws\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cloud services<\/a>, and data-center capacity underlying those systems \u2014 shifting a growing share of the industry\u2019s spending toward infrastructure providers.<\/p>\n<p>Meta is not simply renting raw computing power from Azure. Part of the spending goes through Microsoft Foundry, Microsoft\u2019s AI development platform, which provides developers with access to models from multiple providers.<\/p>\n<p>Foundry essentially puts different AI models behind a common platform, allowing companies to select models rather than building their entire AI workflow around a single provider. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-08-20\/meta-has-quietly-become-one-of-microsoft-s-largest-ai-customers?srnd=ai-jobs-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bloomberg reports<\/a> that Foundry now offers several AI models to 100,000 companies.<\/p>\n<p>That helps explain why Meta would use Microsoft\u2019s platform even as it develops its own models. Bloomberg\u2019s sources say Meta engineers have used OpenAI models through Foundry to assess the output of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelinsider.com\/ai\/news-meta-muse-code\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meta\u2019s own AI systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For Microsoft, that is the more interesting part of the deal. Foundry allows Azure to sit beneath competing AI companies rather than forcing Microsoft to win the model race itself. The same Foundry business has also been cited as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/article\/news-microsoft-china-ai-azure-strategy-apac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the reason the company remains in China<\/a>, where it serves Chinese companies like ByteDance.<\/p>\n<p>Long before Azure became an AI powerhouse, Facebook used Microsoft\u2019s Bing technology to fill gaps in its own search capabilities, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/amitchowdhry\/2014\/12\/15\/facebook-removes-microsoft-bing-search-feature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">but dropped it in 2014<\/a>. Meta later acquired Bing AI for its Meta AI platform and, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence\/meta-develops-own-ai-search-engine-cut-reliance-google-bing-information-reports-2024-10-28\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">according to Reuters<\/a>, began developing an in-house alternative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That history provides useful context for today\u2019s Azure spending. Meta does not necessarily need to abandon its AI ownership plans. The company is using Microsoft\u2019s technology while investing toward greater control of its own AI stack over time.<\/p>\n<p>  Why AI infrastructure may be the steadier bet<\/p>\n<p>For cloud providers, infrastructure vendors, MSPs, and other channel companies, Meta\u2019s Azure spending reinforces a potentially lucrative feature of the AI market: customers do not have to pick one AI ecosystem and stick with it.<\/p>\n<p>An enterprise may build proprietary models, use OpenAI for certain workloads, rent Microsoft Azure capacity, and buy infrastructure from still other vendors. Every additional layer can create another opportunity for providers supplying cloud capacity, networking, storage, integration, security, and managed services.<\/p>\n<p>The risk is that enterprise AI demand will not grow enough to justify the enormous infrastructure expansion now underway. Much of today\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelinsider.com\/news-and-trends\/news-alphabet-25-billion-bond-sale-ai-infrastructure\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> AI infrastructure investment<\/a> assumes companies outside the technology industry will eventually consume substantially more AI computing.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, the industry will retain an unusual dynamic: some of AI\u2019s fiercest competitors will also remain one another\u2019s largest customers.<\/p>\n<p>For the channel, that may be the more important race to watch.
