Right now, there is no greater divisive topic in film than generative AI. There are some powerful industry figures who believe it can be a force for good if used the right way. This includes Industrial Light and Magic, who (for better or for worse) relied on this technology extensively to create Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It also includes Avengers: Doomsday directors the Russo Brothers, who used AI for parts of The Electric State and whose production company has embraced AI wholeheartedly. Still, the Russos and other Marvel<\/a> bigwigs have seemingly avoided AI for their major superhero films.<\/p>\n

That’s because, to many fans, AI is the ultimate boogeyman; a symbol that a creator has phoned things in instead of giving their own, human-powered “maximum effort.” Fortunately, Spider-Man: Brand New Day<\/a> seemed completely free of generative AI, and it impressed fans enough to earn over $2 billion at the box office. However, this blockbuster Marvel movie may be about to lose its reputation thanks to its official artbook. Many of its pages are dedicated to concept art for the film, but one image seems to have all the telltale signs of an AI-generated image.<\/p>\n

AI: Like Stark Tech, But Worse\"\"<\/p>\n

The book in question is The Art of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which was just released this past week. Like most of Marvel’s official artbooks, this tome is perfect for fans who want to get a closer look at their favorite films and more fully immerse themselves in the world of their favorite heroes. For the most part, fans are pleased with the art, almost all of which was seemingly created with human talent. Unfortunately, one concept art page, which is credited to Scott McInnes, has fans questioning the possible use of generative AI.<\/p>\n

At a glance, the image is rather unremarkable: it shows an image of New York City buildings, with a handful of yellow cabs driving by on the street below. However, some eagle-eyed Marvel fans think the image has the telltale signs of AI use. For example, both the buildings and the taxis have a kind of visual warping effect to them that you sometimes get with generated images. There’s also something, presumably meant to be a traffic light, that looks like a big yellow splotch. Speaking of which, others have pointed out how odd it is that the street lights are seemingly three stories tall.<\/p>\n

Spider-Man: Brand New AI\"\"<\/p>\n

Throw in the fact that the whole thing looks a lot like DALL-E art from about two years ago, and plenty of fans are convinced that Marvel used AI to create this concept art. Obviously, suspicions and accusations are not the same as proof, and neither the credited artist nor the studio has admitted to using generative AI while developing Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and all of these could just be Photoshop artifacts. Still, suspicious fans consider this concept art a smoking gun that invites the obvious question: where else has AI been used<\/a> and we just haven’t noticed yet? And why the heck would the studio behind a movie that just earned over $2 billion dollars cheap out on concept art?<\/p>\n

Cynics would say that Marvel using AI for a blockbuster film was inevitable. After all, the studio was already busted using it in Secret Invasion<\/a>, and the Russos, their biggest filmmakers, are unabashedly pro-AI. If so, this is particularly disappointing for a franchise that has frequently explored the dangers of technology run amok. Of course, their movies had us worried about characters like Ultron who would violently wipe humanity off the map. Now, our modern dystopia is much bleaker than that. AI doesn’t represent an existential threat, but a philosophical one. After all, what does it mean to be a human when our best filmmakers outsource their creativity, the most human thing of all, to a machine?<\/p>\n

It means the end of human creativity altogether.
