{"id":148688,"date":"2026-08-23T14:06:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T14:06:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/148688\/"},"modified":"2026-08-23T14:06:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T14:06:16","slug":"fetterman-sides-with-trump-on-ai-national-security-push-with-chinese-warning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/148688\/","title":{"rendered":"Fetterman sides with Trump on AI national security push with Chinese warning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.\u00a0John Fetterman, D-Pa., on Saturday dismissed \u201cAI doomsdaying,\u201d warning that China benefits from \u201coverreaction\u201d by the United States as the two countries compete for <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/19\/business\/data-center-backlash-poised-to-play-critical-role-in-midterms\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dominance in artificial intelligence.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fetterman shared an article on X highlighting a Bloomberg analysis examining what it described as the narrowing US lead over <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/13\/business\/how-china-is-ripping-off-cutting-edge-ai-from-anthropic-openai-and-threatening-us-national-security\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China in the AI race <\/a>and the faster pace at which <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/29\/business\/trump-administration-bans-chinese-robot-imports-citing-national-security-threats\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chinese companies<\/a> are deploying advanced models.<\/p>\n<p>The Pennsylvania Democrat reacted to the report by arguing that advancements in AI are critical to\u00a0national security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI supremacy and energy dominance underpins our national security,\u201d Fetterman wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman added that pulling back on the emerging technology would only benefit America\u2019s competitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina continues to fuel and benefit from our overreaction,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI reject the political pandering and hyperbole over data centers or AI doomsdaying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s post was Fetterman\u2019s latest call for the US to aggressively <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/23\/us-news\/trump-expanding-crackdown-on-data-centers-paying-for-their-electrical-costs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pursue AI development.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Senator John Fetterman speaks during a Senate Committee on Homeland and Government Affairs hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, on July 29, 2026. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman\u2019s stance puts the Pennsylvania Democrat largely in step with Trump on the need to accelerate AI development and expand the nation\u2019s data center infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Fetterman reacted to an article reporting that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/29\/us-news\/house-intel-chief-blasts-bernie-sanders-as-a-threat-to-national-security-over-anti-ai-crusade\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sen. In March, he pushed back against the prospect of imposing a moratorium on\u00a0new AI data centers\u00a0in the US, blasting the proposal as \u201cChina First.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His comments came after President Donald Trump earlier this week encouraged governors and local officials to welcome the construction of AI data centers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe construction jobs are enormous. We\u2019re building the biggest plants anywhere in the world. And I can say, if I were the mayor of a town or the governor of a state, and I had a chance to get a big plant in an AI plant or a data center, I would absolutely want it because the jobs are enormous, and the money paid, the taxes paid are just enormous,\u201d Trump said at the White House on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The president also said the AI industry needs \u201ca little public relations help\u201d as Americans have expressed concerns about data centers being built in their communities.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/709772\/americans-oppose-data-centers-area.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Gallup poll<\/a>\u00a0from May found a majority of Americans opposed the construction of new data centers near where they live.<\/p>\n<p>Those surveyed who opposed the facilities cited concerns including their\u00a0electricity and water consumption and potential environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p>Trump signed an executive order in July aimed at expediting the permitting process for data centers.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the regulation of AI, Trump suggested the industry \u201cmay be bigger than the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re leading by a lot with AI. We want to keep it that way.
