Once connected, Claude can search an inbox, locate specific conversations, summarise lengthy email exchanges and gather information spread across multiple messages.

The latest capability takes the integration a step further by enabling Claude to respond to emails and send those messages from a connected Gmail account. The development moves Claude closer to functioning as an AI agent that can execute routine tasks rather than simply providing answers or generating text.

For users handling high volumes of email, the feature could reduce the amount of manual work involved in processing routine correspondence. A user, for example, can ask Claude to identify messages awaiting a response, review the preceding conversation and prepare an appropriate reply based on the available context.

Human approval remains part of the process

Despite gaining the ability to send emails, Claude does not operate Gmail as a completely autonomous system. A user must review and approve the message before it is sent.

The approval requirement provides an additional safeguard against errors that could arise when an AI interprets a conversation incorrectly or produces a response containing information that the user did not intend to disclose. It also gives users a final opportunity to modify the response before it reaches the recipient.

The approach reflects the increasing emphasis on human oversight as AI systems move from generating content to performing actions on behalf of users.

Claude’s Gmail capabilities also have some differences compared with its interactions with other Google Workspace services. The assistant can already carry out both reading and writing operations with services such as Google Calendar and Google Drive, while sending email remains subject to an additional confirmation step.

Claude moves towards AI-powered task automation

The expansion illustrates a broader shift in the development of AI assistants. Instead of limiting their role to answering questions, companies are increasingly connecting them to productivity applications so they can execute multi-step tasks.

In practice, such integrations could allow users to manage email, documents and schedules through a single conversational interface instead of switching between individual applications.

To use the Gmail functionality, users must first connect their Google account through Claude’s Google Workspace integration. Access to the capabilities is being rolled out based on the user’s Claude plan and account eligibility.

Anthropic’s latest move adds another layer to Claude’s growing ecosystem of connected services, positioning the assistant as a tool for completing everyday digital workflows while retaining user control over actions that can have direct consequences.

Anthropic is expanding Claude’s Google Workspace integration, allowing the AI assistant to search inboxes, analyse conversations, draft responses…

[8
53,3154,182
post-149339","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-anthropic","tag-anthropic","tag-anthropic-claude","tag-claude
["GET
