{"id":149820,"date":"2026-08-24T20:06:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T20:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/149820\/"},"modified":"2026-08-24T20:06:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T20:06:18","slug":"alabama-launches-investigation-into-openais-hack-of-hugging-face","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/149820\/","title":{"rendered":"Alabama launches investigation into OpenAI&#8217;s hack of Hugging Face"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alabama\u2019s Attorney General <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alabamaag.gov\/attorney-general-marshall-launches-investigation-into-openai-and-sam-altman-for-massive-artificial-intelligence-data-breach\/\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> Monday that it sent a subpoena to OpenAI as part of an investigation into the company\u2019s alleged \u201ccomplete lack of oversight and adequate safeguards\u201d in the Hugging Face incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigation comes weeks after <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/07\/21\/openai-says-hugging-face-was-breached-by-its-pre-release-models\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OpenAI admitted<\/a> that one of its unreleased and guardrail-free cybersecurity models had escaped an isolated environment, connected to the internet, and hacked AI dataset platform Hugging Face. As <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/openai-finds-evidence-other-ai-agents-escaped-containment-it-widens-hacking-2026-07-31\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters first reported<\/a>, Hugging Face was only one of four victims of what was supposed to be \u201can internal evaluation\u201d of a model with \u201cmaximal cyber capabilities,\u201d as OpenAI put it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The press release announcing <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alabamaag.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/OpenAI-Subpoena_Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">the subpoena<\/a> sent by the state\u2019s attorney general Steve Marshall said that the state was seeking to understand if OpenAI\u2019s \u201cinability or unwillingness to ensure the safety of its products\u201d violated the state\u2019s consumer protection laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI did not immediately respond to TechCrunch\u2019s request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, Marshall, along with the attorneys general of fourteen other states, including Florida, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Texas, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iowaattorneygeneral.gov\/media\/cms\/08_5392C9E17791C.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">sent a letter<\/a> to OpenAI\u2019s CEO Sam Altman, requesting that he and his company preserve all records related to the Hugging Face incident.
