(WTOC) – The future of artificial intelligence is about much more than computers—it is about the future of humanity itself.

That was the core message delivered by international math champion, social entrepreneur, and distinguished lecturer Po-Shen Loh, who spent the week at Georgia Southern University challenging rural communities to prepare for a “post-AI” world.

As data centers and AI technologies rapidly expand across Southeast Georgia, the high-stakes question of how to navigate these changes is becoming increasingly urgent.

“I actually think it’s healthy for everyone to be fearful of AI. Actually, so am I,” Loh said during his presentation at GSU. “I’m not even saying the AI company is bad, I’m saying that there’s something coming along which actually could be more capable than people and different things. What is the future?”

Loh argues that the rise of AI will have a profound impact on human experiences, particularly when it comes to psychology. To counter the potential vulnerabilities that come with rapid automation, he proposes a unique solution: “build an immune system for humanity.”

Loh envisions this “immune system” as a thoughtful, interconnected network of people who possess both technological expertise and a deep commitment to human well-being.

“A whole network of people who care deeply about people and also have the technological know-how to possibly do something about it,” Loh explained.

During his visit to GSU, Loh focused heavily on middle school students who show an interest in math and science, hoping to help them become “superstars” who will eventually build new opportunities, companies, and technologies in their own hometowns.

Loh noted that the residents and students of Southeast Georgia already possess the core values needed for this transition: a natural inclination to be problem solvers and a dedication to looking out for their neighbors.

“This is a really great core value that I think would be great to expand and propagate all over the place,” Loh said.

Copyright 2026 WTOC.
