PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – The postmaster of Seaside, Oregon, has been arrested and charged in federal court with possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material, as well as production of obscene representations of child sexual abuse, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Ryan Sherman, 36, made his initial appearance Wednesday before a U.S. magistrate judge in Portland. He was ordered detained pending further court proceedings.<\/p>\n
According to court documents, Sherman possessed dozens of child sexual abuse images and videos. Investigators allege that Sherman also used artificial intelligence to generate obscene images of children. Authorities said he took innocuous photographs of children and utilized AI technology to alter them into sexually explicit representations, which he then produced and distributed to contacts online.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors said Sherman used SimpleX, an encrypted messaging platform, to exchange the material with members of a group chat. When asked by another user if he had limits on the types of images he would or could create, Sherman allegedly bragged that he had \u201cnone.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sherman, who was arrested Tuesday in Seaside, holds a position of public trust as the city\u2019s postmaster.<\/p>\n
The case is being investigated by the FBI and the Clatsop County Sheriff\u2019s Office, with assistance from the Seaside Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Natasha Geiling is prosecuting the case.<\/p>\n
The prosecution is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation.<\/p>\n
A criminal complaint is an accusation, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.<\/p>\n
