{"id":152763,"date":"2026-08-27T03:40:30","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T03:40:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/152763\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T03:40:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T03:40:30","slug":"z-ai-shares-surge-8-on-new-ai-model-running-only-on-chinese-chips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/152763\/","title":{"rendered":"Z.ai shares surge 8% on new AI model running only on Chinese chips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Zhipu or Z.ai logo is pictured on a smartphone on Aug. 14, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Cfoto | Future Publishing | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>BEIJING \u2014 Chinese artificial intelligence company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/2513-HK\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Z.ai<\/a> released a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Zai_org\/status\/2092616204787626030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">new model Wednesday<\/a> that the company claims uses entirely homegrown semiconductors to operate.<\/p>\n<p>Called GLM-5.3-Flash, the low-cost version of Z.ai&#8217;s flagship model <a href=\"https:\/\/artificialanalysis.ai\/evaluations\/artificial-analysis-intelligence-index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ranks 10th<\/a> on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, ahead of DeepSeek V4 Pro Max.<\/p>\n<p>Z.ai&#8217;s Hong Kong-listed shares climbed more than 8% in Thursday trading.<\/p>\n<p>The company claimed it used 100,000 China-made chips to handle all online requests to use GLM-5.3-Flash, including when it was released on Aug. 20 under the code name &#8220;Ox Alpha.&#8221; The model ranked <a href=\"https:\/\/openrouter.ai\/rankings#top-models\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">first by usage in the last week<\/a> on the global OpenRouter platform.<\/p>\n<p>CNBC was unable to independently verify Z.ai&#8217;s chip claims. The company declined to share details on which companies&#8217; chips it was using. Running an AI model requires less computing power than training a model.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/08\/26\/nvidia-nvda-earnings-report-q2-2027-live-updates.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">struggled to sell its chips to China<\/a> due to restrictions from Washington and Beijing. Meanwhile, Huawei and other Chinese companies have ramped up efforts to build alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>China has ramped up domestic semiconductor and AI capabilities in an effort to gain tech self-sufficiency in the wake of U.S. restrictions on sales of advanced chips to China. Leading U.S. AI models are also not officially available in China.<\/p>\n<p>Z.ai rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/100-HK\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MiniMax<\/a>&#8216;s shares climbed by around 3% in Hong Kong trading after reporting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minimax.io\/news\/minimax-announces-first-half-2026-financial-results-1787744160\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">283% surge in revenue<\/a> in the first half of the year versus a year ago. <\/p>\n<p>MiniMax reported adjusted net loss more than doubled during that time to $293 million. The company&#8217;s flagship M3 model ranks 18th on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index.<\/p>\n<p>Z.ai is scheduled to report results for the first six months of the year on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The two AI companies both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/08\/china-ai-tiger-goes-ipo-zhipu-hong-kong-debut-openai-knowledge-atlas-hsi-hang-seng-listing.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">listed in Hong Kong in January<\/a>.
