According to Bloomberg<\/a> (via 9to5 Google<\/a>), this deal is structured in phases and is tied heavily to Anthropic hitting specific developmental milestones.<\/p>\n Seriously funding a major rival<\/p>\n The financial commitment from Alphabet is broken into two distinct parts:<\/p>\n The Initial Injection: Google is committing $10 billion in cash up front. This maintains Anthropic\u2019s current valuation at an eye-watering $350 billion.<\/p>\n The Performance Bonus: If Anthropic successfully hits certain \u201cperformance targets,\u201d Google will invest an additional $30 billion, bringing the total potential package to $40 billion.<\/p>\n On the surface, it seems counterintuitive for Google to fund the company building Claude, especially when Claude Opus models are currently dominating the AI coding space and an area Google explicitly wants to win. A huge portion of this $40 billion investment will be used to support a \u201csignificant expansion\u201d of Anthropic\u2019s computing capacity. In short, Google is giving Anthropic the money it needs to buy more server time on Google Cloud infrastructure.
