April 24 (Reuters) – Google-parent Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab<\/a> will invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, as the tech giant deepens \u200bits partnership with the artificial intelligence startup that is also its rival \u200cin the global AI race.<\/p>\n

Anthropic said on Friday that Google has committed $10 billion now in cash at a valuation of $350 billion to help support a major expansion of \u200bits computing capacity, and will invest $30 billion more if the Claude maker \u200bmeets performance targets.<\/p>\n

The investment comes just days after e-commerce giant \u2060Amazon (AMZN.O), opens new tab<\/a> said it will invest up to $25 billion<\/a> in the startup, which has managed \u200bto stand out in the crowded AI industry by focusing its model \u200btraining on coding.<\/p>\n

Anthropic’s Claude Code tool has gained strong traction among developers.<\/p>\n

The company’s annual run-rate revenue surpassed $30 billion this month, up from about $9 billion at the end \u200bof 2025.<\/p>\n

The startup raised $30 billion<\/a> in a funding round in February that \u200bvalued it at $380 billion post-money amid massive investor interest, and has drawn offers from \u200cventure \u2060capital firms valuing it at as much as $800 billion, according to media reports<\/a>.HUNT FOR COMPUTING POWER<\/p>\n

Strong demand for its Claude family of AI models has prompted Anthropic to sign several major deals recently to acquire more computing \u200bcapacity.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, \u200bit struck multi-year \u2060deals with chipmaker Broadcom<\/a>(AVGO.O), opens new tab<\/a> and cloud infrastructure firm CoreWeave<\/a> (CRWV.O), opens new tab<\/a>, and is also set to secure<\/a> nearly 1 gigawatt of capacity \u200bvia Amazon’s chips by year-end.Last year, Anthropic had said it \u200bwould invest $50 billion<\/a> \u2060to build data centers in the U.S. to secure infrastructure to deploy and train its models.Earlier this year, a series of plugin releases for \u2060Anthropic’s \u200bCowork agent sparked a brutal selloff<\/a> in global \u200bsoftware stocks as investors weighed the disruptive potential of sophisticated AI tools.<\/p>\n
