{"id":16601,"date":"2026-04-25T13:58:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T13:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/16601\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T13:58:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T13:58:10","slug":"chatgpt-lawsuit-claims-it-advised-a-shooter-on-how-and-where-to-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/16601\/","title":{"rendered":"ChatGPT lawsuit claims it advised a shooter on how and where to strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Florida\u2019s attorney general has launched a criminal investigation into OpenAI, alleging that <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/topic\/chatgpt\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:ChatGPT;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">ChatGPT<\/a> helped plan the mass shooting at Florida State University that killed two people last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2026\/04\/21\/chatgpt-fsu-shooting-openai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:The Washington Post;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">The Washington Post<\/a>, Attorney General James Uthmeier made the announcement at a news conference on Tuesday, claiming the chatbot gave tactical advice to the suspected shooter. \u201cThe chatbot advised the shooter on what type of gun to use, on which ammo went with which gun, on whether or not a gun would be useful at short range,\u201d Uthmeier said.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Florida AG Press Conference\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"576\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/d1c80262c1f1373f60ab3a987fd795ee.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He didn\u2019t hold back on the implications either: \u201cIf it was a person on the other end of that screen, we would be charging them with murder.\u201d His office has also sent subpoenas to OpenAI, asking the company to explain its policies on how it handles user conversations involving threats of violence.<\/p>\n<p>Is OpenAI responsible for what users do with it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">OpenAI has pushed back firmly. Spokesperson Kate Waters said, \u201cLast year\u2019s mass shooting at Florida State University was a tragedy, but ChatGPT is not responsible for this terrible crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The company claims the ChatGPT provided factual responses to questions that could be found anywhere on the internet and that it did not encourage or promote illegal activity.<\/p>\n<p>Is this just the beginning?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This investigation is part of a growing concern around <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/computing\/artificial-intelligence\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:AI;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">AI<\/a> chatbots. OpenAI is already under scrutiny after a separate mass shooting in Canada and multiple lawsuits from families who claim ChatGPT contributed to the deaths of loved ones by suicide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">AI experts point out that chatbots\u2019 guardrails are imperfect.
