Yonhap News Agency

Google DeepMind, the developer of the Go AI ‘AlphaGo,’ which engaged in a historic match with Lee Sedol 9-dan in 2016, will establish an ‘AI Campus’ in South Korea and pursue cooperation in science and technology AI with local industry, academia, and research institutes.

On the 27th, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul, focusing on joint research in AI for science and technology, AI talent development, and the responsible use of AI. The Four Seasons Hotel was the venue for the ‘Google DeepMind Challenge Match’ between Lee Sedol and AlphaGo in 2016.

After AlphaGo, Google DeepMind developed ‘AlphaFold,’ a revolutionary AI model that predicts protein structures, a long-standing challenge in biology. For this achievement, CEO Hassabis was also a co-recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

The Ministry of Science and ICT is promoting the ‘K-Moonshot’ project, which aims to enhance research productivity and solve national challenges through AI-driven innovation in science and technology. This agreement was established to explore a foundation for cooperation with Google DeepMind across technology, infrastructure, and researcher exchanges.

The two organizations will collaborate in various science and technology fields, including life sciences and weather and climate, and promote joint research and researcher exchanges centered around the National Science AI Research Center, scheduled to open in May of this year. They will also explore collaboration on developing and verifying AI models and tools to accelerate scientific discovery, utilizing scientific data, and establishing a hub for AI-driven bio-innovation research.

In connection with K-Moonshot, Google will establish an AI Campus in Korea to serve as a hub for AI-based science and technology cooperation, expanding collaboration with industry, academia, and research institutes. The two organizations will also create internship opportunities for talented AI researchers to experience the research environment at Google DeepMind.

To ensure the responsible development of AI technology, joint research on enhancing AI safety and safeguards for AI models will also be pursued. They will continue discussions on establishing safety frameworks and testing methodologies in collaboration with the AI Safety Research Institute under the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI).

CEO Hassabis said, “Since the AlphaGo match, which marked the beginning of the modern AI era, Korea has held a very special meaning for Google. We are building on that valuable legacy to embark on a new journey, expanding the horizons in bio-innovation and weather forecasting, while also joining forces as a partner to help build safeguards that ensure AI develops responsibly.”

Bae Kyung-hoon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT, stated, “The MOU signed today will be a pivotal moment for both organizations to cooperate in accelerating AI innovation in science and technology centered on the K-Moonshot, while also disseminating safe and responsible AI research and best practices.”

Following the MOU ceremony, a panel discussion was held with experts including Professor Seok Cha-ok of Seoul National University and Professor Kim Woo-yeon of KAIST, both experts in the bio and new drug fields; Yoo Yong-kyun, Director of the National Science AI Research Center; and Park Ha-eon, CTO of Aim-Intelligence, an expert in AI safety. They discussed accelerating AI-based scientific discovery and collaborative tasks with DeepMind.

The attendees reached a consensus that Korea must fundamentally transform its science and technology research ecosystem to be AI-centric by systematically accumulating and linking research data, AI models, and talent before it is too late. They expressed hope that combining the research capabilities of K-Moonshot and Google DeepMind would lead to significant research outcomes.

The two organizations plan to form a joint working group and will continuously discuss detailed implementation plans through quarterly video conferences and annual in-person meetings. They also intend to consistently address plans for creating and collaborating on an AI hub within Korea.

Copyright ⓒ DongA Science.
