What 15,000 Workers Reveal

Success with AI demands effective integration with people.

getty

Your company is likely using AI, but true success for organizations and people depends on processes that effectively bring people into the loop. From coordination and training to managing fear and anxiety, practices to support employees will be critical for AI success.

AI is becoming embedded. In fact, nearly 97% of respondents said their company deployed AI agents in the last year, and 70% of employees use AI tools daily, according to a survey of 3,000 people by Writer. And a survey of 1,200 by beautiful.ai found that daily use rose from 18% to 34% in just one year. According to Writer, 59% of companies are investing over $1 million annual in AI technology.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite the high usage, 79% of organizations are facing challenges. And 48% say that AI adoption has been “massive disappointment” according to Writer.

With big investments and also big challenges, how do we ensure we’re getting it right?

1. Enhance Coordination Across the Organization

One of the biggest challenges has been lack of coordination. In fact a study of over 12,200 people across the UK, US, Australia, India, Germany and France by Atlassian found that 87% said everyone is in execution mode with little coordination. In addition, 71% said they regularly find teams working on duplicate initiatives or projects.

The survey from Writer went even further, with 54% saying that AI is tearing their company apart and causing power struggles (43%) and disruption (43%).

Increase success with AI adoption by starting with a clear vision about how AI will enhance work and the value to customers. Ensure coordination across the enterprise. Clarify expectations, enhance communication and ensure teams are in the loop with the work of other teams.

2. Train, Develop and Upskill

Another key barrier to success with AI is a lack of training. In the Atlassian survey, 84% said that their organization was focusing on tools more than skills or enabling workers. And only 31% of workers reported having extensive AI learning opportunities.

It is perhaps for this reason that AI output lacks quality, with 49% of workers who say that AI outputs aren’t reliably high-quality. And 48% note that while things may get done more quickly, they lack quality, according to the Atlassian data.

People who have the skills and knowledge to leverage AI successfully see tremendous benefits. They are three times more likely to have received both a pay raise and a promotion in the last year, according to Writer data.

Increase success with AI by training people in how to use it best and how to integrate it into their workflows. Create opportunities for people to try, test, experiment and learn how to incorporate AI into their work.

3. Keep Humans in the Loop

Companies that are adopting AI most effectively are keeping humans in the loop with 81% of respondents to the Atlassian survey who say that the future of work will combine humans and AI and 88% who still trust human judgement more than AI.

Increase success with AI by attending to culture and ensuring people feel part of the bigger picture and respected as key parts of the process. Assess workflows and identify which processes can be optimized by a combination of human and AI work. Ensure that people retain ownership and accountability for their overall output and deliverables.

4. Manage Expectations

It will also be critical to manage expectations and keep them human. Ironically, as technology does more work, the demands on people are rising. In fact only 45% of people in the Atlassian survey said they are working at a comfortable pace, with the majority who say they are expected to work too fast.

In addition, beautiful.ai found that 54% of workers say the expectations for their jobs have increased because of AI. And 37% say they’re being asked to spend time on tasks that are unrelated to their jobs because of AI expectations, according to Atlassian.

Increase success with AI adoption by keeping expectations reasonable. Avoid overloading people and validate that people aren’t prioritizing speed over collaboration or quality. Create the necessary time for employees to ensure rigor and effectiveness as they work together.

5. Manage Fear and Techno-Stress

Perhaps most important, companies can enhance AI adoption by quelling fear and anxiety. According to Writer data, 73% say AI is causing stress or anxiety and fully 38% say the amount of stress is crippling.

And in the beautiful.ai survey, 72% said that employees believe AI will make them less valuable and 70% fear job loss, an increase of 12 points in only one year.

Companies say they are mainly adopting AI to enhance productivity (37%) and streamline efficiency (40%) with significantly fewer saying their aim is to downsize (9%), according to beautiful.ai. But still, fear of job loss is valid, because 60% companies say they will lay off employees who won’t use AI or can’t use AI, according to Writer.

All the stress points to techno-stress which includes feelings of overload in which we feel overwhelmed and like we can’t keep up. It also includes techno-complexity in which we have to invest a lot of time to learn to use the technology effectively. On top of these, it also includes insecurity, uncertainty and the feeling that technology is invading all aspects of life.

Techno-stress has significant consequences, leading to reduced commitment, job satisfaction and retention, according to research published in Information Systems Research. In addition, techno-stress is correlated with negative emotions and reduced quality of life, according to a study in Behavioral Science. And according to research in Frontiers in Psychology, techno-stress led to increases in depression and anxiety.

Increase success with AI adoption by clarifying people’s roles and their importance in the process. Recognize their good work and reinforce their value. Also be clear about expectations for the future in terms of how AI will be incorporated in the organization and what it will take to succeed. People don’t trust what they don’t understand, so clear communication helps people adapt and also adopt new tools effectively.

A Confident Future

Despite the challenges, overall confidence in AI’s capabilities has risen by 22% in the last year, according to beautifu.ai. And according to Writer, 95% say that roles and team structures are already changing because of AI. AI is here to stay.

But humans must be part of the process for success. As Avani Prabhakar, Chief People and AI Enablement Officer at Atlassian says, “A lot of companies are pouring significant energy into the technology side of the transformation of AI and not nearly enough into the people side. To get true value, AI can’t just be a technology shift.”

The question for the future won’t be whether we adopt AI or whether we maintain a commitment to AI. Instead, success will depend on how fast, how well and how humanely we incorporate AI into practices and among people.

Success with AI demands effective integration with people. getty Your company is likely using AI, but true success…

[2
24,13342,25,937,1091,572,134
0":"post-18523","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-ai","8":"tag-ai","9":"tag-ai-adoption-depends-on-people","10":"tag-artificial-intelligence","11":"tag-atlassian","12":"tag-employees","13":"tag-people","14":"tag-technology
["GET
