{"id":18791,"date":"2026-04-27T18:23:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T18:23:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/18791\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T18:23:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T18:23:20","slug":"european-commission-outlines-how-google-must-change-android-for-ai-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/18791\/","title":{"rendered":"European Commission Outlines How Google Must Change Android for AI Services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-335417\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/gemini-android.jpg\" alt=\"European Commission Outlines How Google Must Change Android for AI Services\" width=\"1066\" height=\"600\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>The European Commission (EC) informed Google today what it must do to make Android more interoperable and comply with its legal responsibilities under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese preliminary findings outline the draft measures Google should implement to ensure that third parties have effective access and interoperability with key capabilities of Android,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/digital-markets-act.ec.europa.eu\/commission-seeks-feedback-measures-ensure-interoperability-googles-android-under-digital-markets-act-2026-04-27_en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the EC announced<\/a>. \u201cThe proposed measures aim to ensure that competing AI services can effectively interact with applications on users\u2019 Android devices and execute tasks accordingly, such as sending an email using the user\u2019s preferred email app, ordering food or sharing a photo with friends. Currently, Google largely reserves these capabilities for use by its own AI offerings on Android phones and tablets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among other things, the EC would like to require Google to allow competing AI services to be triggered in Android using a custom wake word, a feature Android currently reserves solely for Google\u2019s Gemini AI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s proposed measures will give more choice to Android users about \u2060the AI services they use and integrate in their phone, including from the vast range of AI services that compete with Google\u2019s own AI,\u201d an EC statement explains.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/digital-markets-act.ec.europa.eu\/dma100220-consultation-proposed-measures-interoperability-google-android-article-67-dma_en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Commission has set up a feedback forum for interested parties<\/a> to see whether its proposed changes to Android meet the needs of competitors. It will remain open until May 13, 2026 after which time it will review the feedback and issue a final determination of Google\u2019s responsibilities.
