{"id":20375,"date":"2026-04-28T17:15:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T17:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/20375\/"},"modified":"2026-04-28T17:15:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T17:15:08","slug":"google-agrees-to-deal-with-pentagon-for-ai-usage-in-classified-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/20375\/","title":{"rendered":"Google agrees to deal with Pentagon for AI usage in classified projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/defense-department\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"3131\">War Department<\/a> has agreed to a deal with <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/google\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"180\">Google<\/a> to use the company\u2019s AI models for classified projects.<\/p>\n<p>The deal, which was reported by the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/google-signs-classified-ai-deal-pentagon-amid-employee-opposition\">Information<\/a>, will\u00a0allow the department to use Google\u2019s AI \u200bfor \u201cany lawful government purpose,\u201d meaning it joins OpenAI and Elon Musk\u2019s xAI, which also \u200bhave\u00a0agreements in place\u00a0to supply AI models for classified use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are proud to be part of a broad consortium of leading AI labs and technology and cloud companies providing AI services and infrastructure in support of national security. We support government agencies across both classified and non-classified projects, applying our expertise to areas like logistics, cybersecurity, diplomatic translation, fleet maintenance, and the defense of critical infrastructure,\u201d a Google spokesperson told the Washington Examiner.<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon\u2019s deal with Google notes that the company does not have \u201cany right to control or veto lawful government operational decision-making.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Google spokesperson continued: \u201cWe believe that providing API access to our commercial models, including on Google infrastructure, with industry-standard practices and terms, represents a responsible approach to supporting national security. We remain committed to the private and public sector consensus that AI should not be used for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weaponry without appropriate human oversight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 600 Google employees sent a letter to CEO Sundar Pichai on Monday urging him not to agree to a deal that allows the company\u2019s AI to be used for classified work, according to the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2026\/04\/27\/google-employees-letter-ai-pentagon\/\">Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to see AI benefit humanity; not to see it being used in inhumane or extremely harmful ways. This includes lethal autonomous weapons and mass surveillance but extends beyond,\u201d the letter read. \u201cThe only way to guarantee that Google does not become associated with such harms is to reject any classified workloads. Otherwise, such uses may occur without our knowledge or the power to stop them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Pentagon has sought deals with most AI providers with the goal of getting them to agree to allow the department to use their programs for \u201cany lawful\u201d use, while Anthropic, one of those companies, was listed as a supply-chain risk after it refused to allow the broad usage of its AI platform, Claude.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/defense\/4537007\/trump-deal-anthropic-possible-supply-chain-risk-designation\/\">TRUMP: DEAL WITH ANTHROPIC STILL \u2018POSSIBLE\u2019 FOR MILITARY USE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anthropic\u00a0did not want Claude to be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons, neither of which department officials say they want to do, but the Pentagon also refuses to allow private companies the final say over how they use the programs. <\/p>\n<p>The company filed two lawsuits that are still playing out regarding the department\u2019s labeling it a supply chain risk, which is a designation that had been exclusive to foreign companies.
