The families allege OpenAI stayed silent after its systems flagged activity by shooting suspect Jesse Van Rootselaar in order to protect the company\u2019s reputation and upcoming initial public offering (IPO).<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/us-news\/law\/openai-employees-raised-alarms-about-canada-shooting-suspect-months-ago-b585df62\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Wall Street Journal reports<\/a> that OpenAI \u201cconsidered\u201d flagging the 18-year-old\u2019s activity to police, which reportedly involved conversations about gun violence, but ultimately decided against it. The lawsuits accuse OpenAI of lying about its move to \u201cban\u201d Van Rootselaar, as the company allegedly only deactivated the suspect\u2019s account, who later created a new one under another email:<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup ewrhy38 _1xwtict1\">When OpenAI was later forced to disclose that the Shooter created a new account, it told a second lie: it claimed they must have \u201cevaded\u201d the company\u2019s safeguards to create one. But there were no safeguards to evade. The Shooter simply followed OpenAI\u2019s own instructions to create a new account after being banned. The \u201csafeguards\u201d OpenAI pointed to after the attack did not fail; they did not exist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The families also claim GPT-4o\u2019s \u201cdefective\u201d design played a part in the mass shooting.
