Anthropic, the artificial intelligence safety company behind the Claude family of large language models, is considering raising fresh capital at a valuation of more than $900 billion, around $50 billion more than had been touted.<\/p>\n
The move would more than double its current worth and potentially make it the most valuable AI startup in the world.<\/p>\n
According to multiple reports, led by Bloomberg’s coverage, the\u00a0San Francisco-based company has received multiple preemptive offers to raise around $50 billion at a valuation in the $850 billion to $900 billion range, with discussions described as at a very early stage and no offers yet accepted.<\/p>\n
Should the round proceed at the reported valuation, it would dethrone rival OpenAI, valued at $852 billion in March, as the world’s most valuable AI startup.<\/p>\n
A board meeting in May is expected to produce a definitive decision on whether to proceed and at what terms, TechCrunch said, adding that the fundraising push comes ahead of a potential initial public offering that Bloomberg reported could be launched as soon as October.<\/p>\n
Anthropic’s most recent funding round, completed in February, raised $30 billion at a valuation of $380 billion. The speed of the valuation expansion reflects surging commercial momentum, with the company saying earlier this month that it has reached $30 billion in annualised revenue, against roughly $10 billion generated across the whole of last year.<\/p>\n
That momentum has been compounded by the breakout success of Claude Code, Anthropic’s AI coding assistant, and by a series of major infrastructure commitments from its largest backers.<\/p>\n
Google said earlier this month that it plans to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, while Amazon agreed to invest up to $25 billion and secured compute capacity for training and deploying Claude models.<\/p>\n
The competitive pressure cuts both ways. As Anthropic has gained momentum, OpenAI has reportedly missed some of its own targets for revenue and user growth, and has moved to streamline its product portfolio around AI agents and new model development.<\/p>\n
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by a group of former OpenAI employees and has since built a suite of AI tools aimed at transforming how businesses handle tasks ranging from coding to cybersecurity.<\/p>\n
The company had previously resisted investor proposals at valuations of $800 billion or more, but sources told TechCrunch it is finding it increasingly difficult to resist the pressure to secure more capital in what could be its final round of private fundraising before a public listing.<\/p>\n
