(QCOM) CEO Cristiano Amon reportedly said on Thursday that the emergence of AI agents will help the company establish itself in the artificial intelligence segment across all devices it supports.

During an interview with CNBC, Amon highlighted the evolution of the AI industry, which has moved from data centers and foundational models to AI agents that will now help generate demand for tokens.

“In the very beginning, it was about training… you have data centers, create foundational models for AI. Then, as you create those models, you start generating tokens, then you have inference,” Amon said, adding how the inference market evolved differently when compared to the training market.

He stated that the data center market then began to disaggregate, with the focus shifting away from Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) toward Neural Processing Units (NPUs).

“Now we have something super interesting, which is agents. That is what will actually generate the demand for tokens. And that positions Qualcomm very well, because now it creates an opportunity across devices that we serve today… from phones, personal computers to cars,” Amon said.

A token is a unit of data processed by AI models during training and inference, obtained by breaking larger chunks of information into smaller ones. AI models process these tokens to establish relationships among them and perform reasoning, generation, and prediction.

Qualcomm shares were up nearly 17% in Thursday morning’s trade. QCOM was among the top trending tickers on Stocktwits at the time of writing.

Agent-Driven Future Of AI Across Devices

Amon added that AI agents will require significant Central Processing Unit (CPU) resources to run across devices, creating an opportunity for agent-driven devices that will drive an upgrade cycle for both companies and consumers.

He said that all the AI companies see end-consumer devices as the endpoints for AI and agents.

“As you’d expect, we’re working with all of them as they all think of personal AI devices, new categories of devices, what are phones going to look like… we’re working with all of those companies,” Amon added.

He also touted Qualcomm as having one of the best CPUs in the world for data centers, and that the company is building data center capabilities through custom chips and inference accelerators.

Amon stated that the rise of AI agents is reshaping the roadmap for every platform Qualcomm is developing, and added that an initial shipment of custom silicon chips to a leading hyperscaler is on track for later this year.

Wall Street Turns Bullish

According to TheFly, analysts at Cantor Fitzgerald raised their price target on Qualcomm to $150 from $135 while maintaining a ‘Neutral’ rating on the stock.
