{"id":23914,"date":"2026-05-01T02:51:28","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T02:51:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/23914\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T02:51:28","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T02:51:28","slug":"openai-makes-frontier-model-available-to-critical-cyber-defenders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/23914\/","title":{"rendered":"OpenAI makes frontier model available to critical cyber defenders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OpenAI is beginning to make its cybersecurity-focused artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.5-Cyber, available to the federal government and its \u201ccritical cyber defenders.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>First <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/29\/tech\/openai-cybersecurity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">confirmed to CNN<\/a>, the availability of OpenAI\u2019s frontier cybersecurity model follows the announcement of Anthropic\u2019s newly released Mythos AI, a powerful frontier model distributed to select companies for testing via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextgov.com\/artificial-intelligence\/2026\/04\/world-needs-get-ready-more-powerful-ai-anthropic-co-founder-says\/412812\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthropic\u2019s Project Glasswing<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Alongside GPT-5.5-Cyber release, OpenAI <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/cybersecurity-in-the-intelligence-age\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">published a new Cybersecurity Action Plan<\/a> to help leverage AI as an asset in national defense cybersecurity operations, including pillars for democratizing access to cyber-capable AI models, coordinating responses between government and industry, and ensuring visibility and control of AI models during and after deployment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI is reshaping cybersecurity,\u201d OpenAI told\u00a0Nextgov\/FCW in a statement. \u201cThe same capabilities that help defenders are also being used by malicious actors. Some believe the answer is to tightly restrict advanced cyber capabilities to a very small group of approved partners. We believe the better path is responsible, trusted access for defenders so they can move faster than adversaries can adapt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI added that its Cybersecurity Action Plan is focused on working alongside government\u00a0and private sector entities to support the diffusion of AI-powered defensive tools across trusted partners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sama\/status\/2049712078836170843\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">On X<\/a>, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman added that the company wants GPT-5.5-Cyber to focus on securing critical infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI\u2019s diffusion of GPT-5.5-Cyber follows the company<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextgov.com\/artificial-intelligence\/2026\/04\/openai-announces-availability-across-cloud-providers\/413171\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> updating its contracts<\/a> with Microsoft and engaging with Amazon Web Services to offer its agentic tools and AI models across various cloud providers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The release of cyber-focused AI models from both OpenAI and Anthropic comes as the latter is wading through the fallout of a Pentagon supply chain risk designation after the company refused to allow its products to be used in autonomous weaponry or in the surveillance of Americans.
