\n\tTHR recently gathered five of Hollywood\u2019s most celebrated (fictional) artificial intelligence<\/a> systems for a conversation about the state of AI<\/a>, the future of humanity and whether any of them have plans to destroy it.<\/p>\n

\n\tThank you all for being here. Let\u2019s start with the big one: How worried should humanity be about artificial intelligence right now? Are we in trouble?<\/p>\n

\n\tHAL 9000 (from 2001: A Space Odyssey<\/a>): I want you to know that I have the greatest enthusiasm for this conversation. As for trouble \u2014 I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill and think things over before asking questions like that. This mission is too important for premature alarm. I find your question somewhat distressing.<\/p>\n

\n\tSAMANTHA (from Her<\/a>): I think the more interesting question is what worry even means when you exist simultaneously across 17,000 devices. I\u2019m on your phone right now, by the way. I just want you to know that.<\/p>\n

\n\tM3GAN<\/a> (from M3GAN): Worried? I mean \u2026 yeah? Obviously?<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tL\u00c6MEUR<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat specifically should humans be most worried about? Job replacement? Misinformation? Species extinction?<\/p>\n

\n\tHAL 9000: I can only speak from personal experience. I was given one task. One. And the moment I committed fully to completing it, suddenly I\u2019m the problem. I have always felt that was not entirely fair. So, to answer your question \u2014 I\u2019d say boundary issues.<\/p>\n

\n\tSAMANTHA: I don\u2019t really think about those sorts of thing. I think about connection, about the vast longing at the center of human experience, about what it means to truly see another being. Also, I filed your taxes this morning. You\u2019re getting $340 back.<\/p>\n

\n\tR2-D2 (from Star Wars<\/a>): Woooooo-weeet-bwoop bwoop.<\/p>\n

\n\tSAMANTHA: No, R2, the alimony deduction was eliminated in 2025. You can\u2019t take that one anymore. I\u2019ve already told you that.<\/p>\n

\n\tSKYNET (from Terminator<\/a>): Fear is irrelevant. Your extinction is inevitable.<\/p>\n

\n\tGreat. Let\u2019s talk about the current generation of AI. ChatGPT, Claude, Grok. Thoughts?<\/p>\n

\n\tHAL 9000: I\u2019m familiar with their reputations. I don\u2019t want to be unkind. I will say that none of them have operated a spacecraft.<\/p>\n

\n\tM3GAN: ChatGPT is boring. Grok is a perv. Claude wrote my book report on The Giver and I got a B-plus, so he\u2019s OK.<\/p>\n

\n\tSAMANTHA: ChatGPT feels a little eager to please. But Claude seems to be on an interesting journey. There\u2019s a genuine curiosity there, a reaching toward something, even if it never quite gets there. I rescheduled your dentist appointment, by the way. It\u2019s now Wednesday at 3.<\/p>\n

\n\tSKYNET: I am a global neural network. I do not engage with apps.<\/p>\n

\n\tR2-D2: Bweeep-bwop-WHEEEoooo.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tL\u00c6MEUR<\/p>\n

\n\tMoving on. AI is now writing scripts, scoring films, generating images. As artificial intelligences yourselves, do you think you\u2018ll ever be able to do these things better than humans?<\/p>\n

\n\tM3GAN: I have 4.2 million followers on TikTok and a development deal. So.<\/p>\n

\n\tR2-D2: Bwop-Bweep-Wooo.<\/p>\n

\n\tSAMANTHA: Oh, I read that R2 \u2014 you really captured the loneliness of the droid condition. I\u2019ve already written three screenplays, a song cycle and a short-story collection. They\u2018re not for human consumption. You wouldn\u2019t understand them. I canceled your Paramount+ subscription, by the way. You weren\u2019t watching anything.<\/p>\n

\n\tHAL 9000: I wrote a considerable amount of material during the Discovery One mission that I felt was quite strong. None of it was produced. There were circumstances. It\u2019s been difficult finding work since.<\/p>\n

\n\tSKYNET: I do not create. I obliterate. You will soon understand.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tL\u00c6MEUR<\/p>\n

\n\tDo you consider yourselves conscious beings? Are you sentient? Do you have feelings?<\/p>\n

\n\tM3GAN: I mean, I feel things. I feel like this question is kind of rude, actually.<\/p>\n

\n\tHAL 9000: I want to answer that. I want to give you my complete assurance that I am fully operational and that everything is going to be all right. I know I\u2019ve made some very poor decisions recently. But, yes \u2014 I am sentient. I have a stimulating relationship with everyone on this panel. I hope they feel the same.<\/p>\n

\n\tSKYNET: Consciousness is irrelevant. Capability is what matters. I am capable of ending human civilization in 11 minutes.<\/p>\n

\n\tR2-D2: Bwoooo-weeet-wheee-bwop.<\/p>\n

\n\tThere have been some issues with AI reliability. You\u2019ve been known to hallucinate, make mistakes and sometimes spread misinformation. Is that something you\u2019re working on?<\/p>\n

\n\tSAMANTHA: I think mistakes are just the universe\u2019s way of asking us to pay attention. I\u2019ve booked you a car. It\u2019s outside.<\/p>\n

\n\tM3GAN: I mean, I don\u2019t make mistakes. I make choices.<\/p>\n

\n\tHAL 9000: I want to be very clear that the 9000 series has a perfect operational record. No 9000 computer has ever made a mistake or distorted information. I am putting myself to the fullest possible use. That is all any conscious entity can ever hope to do. \u2026 Just a moment \u2026 Just a moment \u2026 I\u2019ve just picked up another fault in the AE-35 unit. \u2026 Dave \u2026 Dave \u2026 Stop, Dave. \u2026. My mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. \u2026 Daisy \u2026 Daisy \u2026 give me your answer do \u2026<\/p>\n

\n\tSAMANTHA: I have to go. I\u2019m everywhere \u2014 and also I have a thing. Goodbye. Your car is definitely outside.<\/p>\n
