{"id":24711,"date":"2026-05-01T18:35:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T18:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/24711\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T18:35:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T18:35:12","slug":"pentagon-freezes-out-anthropic-as-it-signs-deals-with-ai-rivals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/24711\/","title":{"rendered":"Pentagon freezes out Anthropic as it signs deals with AI rivals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The Department of Defense announced on Friday that it had struck deals with seven leading artificial intelligence companies to deploy their systems within classified Pentagon networks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Included in the roster of partnerships \u2014 intended for \u201clawful operational use\u201d \u2014 are SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, NVIDIA, Reflection, Microsoft and Amazon Web Services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cThese agreements accelerate the transformation toward establishing the United States military as an AI-first fighting force and will strengthen our warfighters\u2019 ability to maintain decision superiority across all domains of warfare,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.war.gov\/News\/Releases\/Release\/Article\/4475177\/classified-networks-ai-agreements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.war.gov\/News\/Releases\/Release\/Article\/4475177\/classified-networks-ai-agreements\/\">the department said in a statement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">\u201cTogether, the War Department and these strategic partners share the conviction that American leadership in AI is indispensable to national security,\u201d it added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Under the agreements, systems will be rolled out within the department\u2019s Impact Level 6 and Impact Level 7 network environments, where they are intended to streamline data synthesis, elevate situational understanding and augment decision-making in complex operational environments. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the financial terms of the contracts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Notably absent from the announcement is the AI frontier lab Anthropic, which the Department of Defense designated a supply-chain risk to U.S. national security in March. The move was the first of its kind against an American firm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">At the center of the dispute is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/statement-department-of-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/statement-department-of-war\">Anthropic\u2019s refusal<\/a> to grant the Pentagon unrestricted access to its Claude models for use in fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">At the height of the furor, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecWar\/status\/2027507717469049070?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecWar\/status\/2027507717469049070?s=20\">in a post on X<\/a>, declared that \u201ceffective immediately, no contractor, supplier, or partner\u201d doing business with the Pentagon may engage in any commercial activity with the company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Anthropic subsequently sued the Trump administration in two separate lawsuits, asking federal judges in San Francisco and Washington, D.C. to overturn the order; the case remains ongoing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Signs of rapprochement, however, have emerged in recent weeks. President Donald Trump\u2019s chief of staff Susie Wiles and other senior officials met with Anthropic\u2019s CEO Dario Amodei at the White House on April 17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-sc-1tqpf5s-0 bFwqVI body-paragraph body-paragraph\">Following the meeting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/21\/cnbc-transcript-president-donald-trump-speaks-with-cnbcs-squawk-box-today-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/21\/cnbc-transcript-president-donald-trump-speaks-with-cnbcs-squawk-box-today-.html\">Trump told CNBC<\/a> that a deal with the firm was \u201cpossible,\u201d adding, \u201cThey\u2019re very smart, and I think they can be of great use. I like smart people.
