{"id":24882,"date":"2026-05-01T21:46:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T21:46:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/24882\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T21:46:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T21:46:14","slug":"houston-isd-to-launch-ai-future-2-schools-in-2026-2027-school-year-texas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/24882\/","title":{"rendered":"Houston ISD to launch AI &#8216;Future 2&#8217; schools in 2026-2027 school year | Texas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">(The Center Square) \u2013\u00a0Texas&#8217; largest school district, currently under a state takeover, is launching nine artificial intelligence focused schools.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles launched a Future 2 Artificial Intelligence pilot school program for the 2026-2027 school year through \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/accelhou.houstonisd.org\/future-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Accelerate Houston<\/a>.\u201d It\u2019s the first program of its kind in the state.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Miles was appointed in 2023 after the Texas Education Agency took over HISD, citing years of failing grades and corruption. He launched a New Education System reform model and two years later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/texas\/article_9b2f0c93-9d4e-4c8f-bd99-4d45cdab1040.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">grades have gone up<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In a recent meeting with teachers, Miles said that Future 2 \u201cbuilds on the NES foundation and evolves it by expanding innovative student programming and thus, student worldview.\u201d There\u2019s an \u201curgency\u201d to create virtual schools, he says, in order to \u201cnarrow the growing Year 2030 competencies gap and provide students with the skills and knowledge to compete.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">HISD spokesman Jos\u00e9 Irizarry\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6-Sndhmszo4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> Future 2 is \u201cnot a regular school.\u201d Teachers will use AI to teach. While they will still teach core subjects, they will provide \u201cpersonalized tech-supported instruction\u201d and students will use AI-powered tools to learn.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The school day will be broken up into three parts. The first will focus on coursework with core classes and \u201cAI literacy and design thinking.\u201d The second will focus on \u201cexperiences where students will build real-world skills, including hands on projects and even travel opportunities.\u201d The third will focus on \u201cworkshops where they can focus on specialized skills like music, sports or other interests,\u201d HISD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OIkvYUtultw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains.<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Eligibility requirements were posted for parents to apply through a virtual launchpad for their children to attend a new virtual school model.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cBeginning in the 2026\u201327 school year, nine campuses will transition to PreK-8 grade Future 2 programs, offering families the opportunity to enroll in a school experience built for the future, not the past. By aligning education with the skills required in a modern economy, Future 2 Schools are designed to help Houston grow a resilient, adaptable, and competitive generation of learners,\u201d HISD <a href=\"https:\/\/accelhou.houstonisd.org\/future-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFuture 2 Schools combine strong core academics with a deliberate focus on human-centered skills \u2013 the abilities least likely to be disrupted as artificial intelligence automates an estimated 57% of jobs by 2030. Students will develop advanced problem-solving, leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills while learning how to think critically and adapt in complex environments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Five existing elementary schools and two middle schools will be transformed into AI Future 2 schools. They include Bonham Elementary School, Clemente Martinez Elementary School, Deady Middle School, Forest Brook Middle School, Gregg Elementary School, Hartman Middle School, Shadydale Elementary School, Southmayd Elementary School and Sugar Grove Academy Middle School.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Nearly all appear to be located in low-income neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">School days at these campuses begin at 7:30 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m., with campuses open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. \u201cSome required learning experiences may occur after school, on weekends, or outside the school building. HISD will provide opportunities to complete requirements during or after the school day, but families should expect a differently structured school day,\u201d HISD says.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If parents don\u2019t want their children to participate in AI focused instruction at these schools, they will have to enroll them elsewhere, HISD says. The schools are also expected to have new principals and teachers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Future 2 schools are \u201cthe next stage in changing the American public education system,\u201d Miles maintains.\u00a0\u201cSchools must shift focus from \u2018what to know\u2019 to \u2018how to think.\u2019 What is our competitive advantage in an AI-enabled world?\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cFuture 2 is a departure from traditional education by incorporating critical thinking into core instruction rather than treating it as an add-on,\u201d HISD <a href=\"https:\/\/hisdnow.houstonisd.org\/p\/~board\/district-news\/post\/hisd-to-launch-future-2-schools-ushering-in-a-paradigm-shift-for-the-ai-era\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains.<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">HISD has also published an <a href=\"https:\/\/resources.finalsite.net\/images\/v1777472784\/houstonisdorg\/ffvo6lng6pttnchgfzgh\/25-26HISDAIGuidebook.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI guidebook<\/a> that explains HISD strategy, guidelines and resources for staff and students to engage with \u201cgenerative artificial intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In an email sent to campus leaders, Miles said the pilot phase would be expanded in the 2027-2028 school year to 25 schools and to 100 by 2031, Government Technology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govtech.com\/education\/k-12\/state-appointed-supt-envisions-100-ai-focused-campuses-for-houston-isd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported.<\/a> His current contract with HISD ends June 2030.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The AI push comes after virtual learning has proven to be a failure in public schools and digital learning has resulted in failing cognitive capabilities and worse learning outcomes, The Center Square <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/texas\/article_6d2f4933-e5c2-4f80-8d83-7ca2fc14dddd.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A critic of the plan, elected trustee Pl\u00e1cido G\u00f3mez\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.govtech.com\/education\/k-12\/state-appointed-supt-envisions-100-ai-focused-campuses-for-houston-isd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>, &#8220;What these ed-tech programs tend to do is, they use the same model as social media addiction by having games and gimmicks and short bursts of dopamine &#8230; which really isn&#8217;t the same thing as learning.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"(The Center Square) \u2013\u00a0Texas&#8217; largest school district, currently under a state takeover, is launching nine artificial intelligence focused&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":6990,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[24,25,76,106],"class_list":{"0":"post-24882","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-ai","8":"tag-ai","9":"tag-artificial-intelligence","10":"tag-education","11":"tag-texas"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24882","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=24882"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/24882\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/6990"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=24882"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=24882"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=24882"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
