Floridians deserve safe products, secure data, and stronger protection for children online.

But broad rules on artificial intelligence risk creating new problems.

AI is already part of daily life. It helps doctors detect disease earlier, filters fraud from financial transactions, and powers tools that families and small businesses rely on every day. These innovations are already improving lives. Overly prescriptive regulation could take a step backward, drive investment out of Florida, and make it harder for new ideas to take root here.

Americans for Prosperity-Florida believes the government should be careful and targeted, not expansive and reactive, with AI regulations. When policymakers try to regulate an entire technology rather than address specific harms, they often limit competition and discourage innovation. A broad approach would hurt Florida consumers, workers, and entrepreneurs alike.

A top concern in the AI debate is protecting children online. Without question, families deserve safeguards that keep kids safe from predators, harmful content, and misuse of personal data. But sweeping AI mandates are not the most effective way to achieve that goal. Stronger enforcement of existing laws, better tools for parents, and clear accountability for bad actors can deliver real protection without restricting the broader development of technology.

AI technology is evolving quickly. Laws that attempt to anticipate every future use of AI will quickly become outdated almost immediately. A better approach focuses on clearly defined harms and holds bad actors accountable when those harms occur. That kind of framework protects people without deterring innovation.

House Speaker Daniel Perez has shown strong leadership in this conversation, recognizing that Florida must strike the right balance between protecting consumers and allowing innovation to thrive. That kind of approach is exactly what this moment calls for.

Free markets play an important role in driving safety and accountability. Companies that fail to protect users lose trust and customers. That pressure encourages better products and stronger safeguards. When harm does occur, courts already provide a path for accountability. Expanding government control over an emerging industry should not be the first step.

AI is not just an economic issue; it’s also a matter of national security. The United States is in a global race to lead in AI, and falling behind competitors like China would have serious consequences for both our economy and our security. That reality underscores why this issue is best addressed at the federal level, not through a patchwork of state-by-state regulations. If policymakers get this wrong, there will be fewer jobs, fewer opportunities, and less investment in America’s future.

There is a better path forward.

Lawmakers can protect children, safeguard personal data, and promote responsible use of AI without overreaching. That effort is best led at the federal level, where a coordinated approach can provide clear, consistent standards and avoid a fragmented patchwork of state-by-state regulations. Federal leaders have already taken important steps to advance a national framework, including executive action under President Donald Trump to prioritize American leadership in AI and support responsible innovation.

Building on that momentum, policymakers should focus on addressing specific harms, empowering families, and allowing innovation to continue without creating unnecessary barriers.

Americans for Prosperity-Florida supports policies that protect people while preserving freedom.

Florida lawmakers can lead with a balanced approach that addresses real concerns without holding back the technology shaping our future.

___

Skylar Zander is the State Director of Americans for Prosperity-Florida.

The Florida Legislature is set to consider the Artificial Intelligence Bill of Rights this week.
