US President Donald Trump is one of the biggest supporters of AI. He often shares AI-generated images on social media<\/a>, and emphasises that the US is leading the AI race, particularly against China. However, it seems that after Anthropic announced Claude Mythos<\/a> \u2013 an AI so powerful that it could hack almost any operating system out there \u2013 Trump wants his administration to have more oversight over new AI models.<\/p>\n

As per a report from the New York Times, the Trump administration is considering bringing new AI models under official government oversight. The White House is reportedly considering an executive order to set up an AI working group that could examine how such oversight could work.<\/p>\n

US government to oversee AI?<\/p>\n

The report states that the working group would likely include technology executives and government officials who can develop oversight procedures. The group can then review AI models before they are released.<\/p>\n

It is believed that the Trump administration has discussed the idea of such a group with executives from Google, Anthropic and OpenAI.<\/p>\n

The report indicates that some officials in the White House also favour a system that would give the US government first access to such models without blocking their release. This move would mark a significant shift from President Donald Trump\u2019s earlier hands-off approach to this technology.<\/p>\n

In July last year, Donald Trump spoke on the need to grow the AI industry. He said at the time, “We\u2019re going to make this industry absolutely the top, because right now it\u2019s a beautiful baby that\u2019s born We can\u2019t stop it. We can\u2019t stop it with politics. We can\u2019t stop it with foolish rules and even stupid rules.”<\/p>\n

US Vice President JD Vance has previously stated that the \u201cexcessive regulation of the AI sector could kill a transformative industry just as it\u2019s taking off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump administration and AI<\/p>\n

While Trump has been in favour of AI, his administration has found itself in controversy over the use of AI, particularly the Pentagon. Earlier this year, the Pentagon labelled Anthropic a supply chain risk<\/a> after the AI company refused to give unrestricted access to its AI models for military use. The US Department of Defense then signed a deal with OpenAI<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n

However, the White House found itself in a difficult position when Anthropic announced Claude Mythos. Mythos is believed to be so powerful that it can potentially exploit cybersecurity flaws that were never spotted by humans. While Anthropic decided only to release Mythos to a select group of companies, the Trump administration is reportedly discussing the use of the model across government agencies<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Do note that governments and companies around the world are concerned about Claude Mythos. Last month, India\u2019s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held a meeting with heads of various banks to discuss the potential cybersecurity risks<\/a> associated with the model.<\/p>\n
