In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/news-events\/news\/2026\/05\/caisi-signs-agreements-regarding-frontier-ai-national-security-testing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an announcement on Tuesday<\/a>, the Commerce Department\u2019s Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) says it will work with the AI companies to perform \u201cpre-deployment evaluations and targeted research to better assess frontier AI capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">CAISI, which started evaluating models from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/news-events\/news\/2024\/08\/us-ai-safety-institute-signs-agreements-regarding-ai-safety-research\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OpenAI and Anthropic in 2024<\/a>, says it has performed 40 reviews so far. Both companies \u201chave renegotiated their existing partnerships with the center to better align with priorities in President Donald Trump\u2019s AI Action Plan,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-05-05\/ai-firms-agree-to-give-us-early-access-to-evaluate-their-models?embedded-checkout=true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The White House may take these evaluations even further in the future, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/04\/technology\/trump-ai-models.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a Monday report from The New York Times<\/a> suggests that Trump is considering an executive order that would \u201cbring together tech executives and government officials\u201d to oversee new AI models.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Here\u2019s what CAISI director Chris Fall had to say in the press release:<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup ewrhy38 _1xwtict1\">Independent, rigorous measurement science is essential to understanding frontier AI and its national security implications.
