We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>A prominent Canadian fiddle player filed a $1.5 million defamation lawsuit against <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/google-trump-deal-protest-pentagon-ai-b2970268.html\">Google<\/a>, alleging the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/google-experts-meta-b2959141.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence tools<\/a> falsely identified him as a convicted sex offender.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley MacIsaac, a three-time Juno Award winner, filed the claim in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. The lawsuit, seen by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2026\/may\/05\/canadian-ashley-macisaac-fiddler-musician-singer-songwriter-sues-google-ai-sex-offender-ntwnfb\">The Guardian<\/a>, alleges that Google is liable for the \u201cforeseeable republication\u201d of its AI Overview feature, which MacIsaac claims published defamatory statements suggesting he had been convicted of multiple criminal offenses.<\/p>\n<p>The musician is seeking $500,000 in general damages, $500,000 in aggravated damages and $500,000 in punitive damages, the outlet reports.<\/p>\n<p>The AI-generated summary incorrectly stated that MacIsaac had been convicted of sexual assault, internet luring of a child and assault causing bodily harm, The Guardian reports. The lawsuit further alleges that the tool wrongly claimed MacIsaac was listed on the national sex offender registry for life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the creator and operator of the AI overview, Google is also liable for injuries and losses arising from the AI overview\u2019s defective design,\u201d the lawsuit states. \u201cGoogle knew, or ought to have known, that the AI overview was imperfect and could return information that was untrue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/465309714.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Following the initial controversy, Google\u2019s AI Overview feature for the musician has been updated to include information about the lawsuit itself. The tool now informs users that MacIsaac made headlines in late 2025 and 2026 for taking legal action against the search giant (Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a human spokesperson made these false allegations on Google\u2019s behalf, a significant award of punitive damages would be warranted,\u201d the lawsuit claims. \u201cGoogle should not have lesser liability because the defamatory statements were published by software that Google created and controls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The legal filing claims Google has not contacted MacIsaac or offered an apology. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle\u2019s cavalier and indifferent response to its publication of utterly false statements claiming that MacIsaac committed serious sexual offenses, including offenses involving children, justifies the award of aggravated and\/or punitive damages,\u201d the civil suit states.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement provided by his lawyers to The Guardian, the musician elaborated on the personal motivation behind his decision to pursue legal action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I first discovered the false statements Google was publishing about me, I felt I needed to speak out to the media to clear my name and bring attention to the issue,\u201d the statement read. \u201cI believe this is a serious issue that needs to be resolved in the courts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Independent has contacted Google for comment.<\/p>\n<p>When MacIsaac first went public with the claims in December, a Google spokesperson told the press that the company invested significantly in response quality and used examples of misinterpreted content to improve its systems. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen issues arise \u2014 like if our features misinterpret web content or miss some context \u2014 we use those examples to improve our systems and may take action under our policies,\u201d the company stated. <\/p>\n<p>Current Google AI Overviews for the musician now include details of the litigation and mention that he made headlines for his legal action against the search giant in late 2025 and 2026.<\/p>\n<p>MacIsaac previously told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/cape-breton-fiddler-ashley-macisaac-lawsuit-against-google-9.7187490\">The Canadian Press<\/a> that the error left him with fear regarding his personal safety while performing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt that tangible fear from something that was published by a media company,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201cI feared for my own safety going on stage because of what I was labelled as. And I don&#8217;t know how long this will follow me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The musician said he discovered the inaccuracies after the Sipekne\u2019katik First Nation canceled a scheduled concert on December 19.
