Xbox\u2019s new CEO, Asha Sharma, is on a roll lately. After committing to improving Xbox already and, as of today, restructuring leadership<\/a>, she has now taken to X (formerly Twitter) with another message for fans, stating:<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cXbox needs to move faster, deepen our connection with the community, and address friction for both players and developers. Today, we promoted leaders who helped build Xbox, while also bringing in new voices to help push us forward. This balance is important as we get the business back on track. As part of this shift, you\u2019ll see us begin to retire features that don\u2019t align with where we\u2019re headed. We will begin winding down Copilot on mobile and will stop development of Copilot on console.\u201d<\/p>\n

It seems, or at least feels as though, Sharma has come into Xbox with a fine-toothed comb and is willing to make changes to get things back on track. This latest update shows a clear shift in priorities, especially when it comes to cutting or at least winding down features that do not align with her vision for Xbox.<\/p>\n

For those unaware, Copilot is Microsoft\u2019s AI companion<\/a>, similar to tools like ChatGPT<\/a> or Google\u2019s Gemini. However, unlike those, Copilot has struggled to gain traction despite heavy investment.<\/a><\/p>\n

With this change, plans for Copilot within the Xbox app are winding down, and plans to bring Copilot to console are over. Xbox Copilot would have allowed users to ask for help while playing games, but Sharma\u2019s post suggests Microsoft is stepping away from pushing AI<\/a> into Xbox for now.<\/p>\n

For me, this signals a smart move. Sharma has just appointed new roles at Xbox, bringing in people from CoreAI<\/a>, which was always going to draw some scrutiny over fears of AI overreach, so announcing the end of Copilot on console is one way to shut that down.<\/p>\n
