Microsoft appears to be stepping away from one of its biggest AI gaming experiments. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has now confirmed that development on Copilot for Xbox consoles is being stopped completely. Additionally, Copilot for mobile devices<\/a> will \u201cbegin winding down\u201d.<\/p>\n

In a new statement shared on X, Sharma explained that Xbox is currently going through major internal changes focused on improving the overall gaming experience for both players and developers. According to her, the company wants Xbox to move faster, strengthen its relationship with the community, and reduce friction across the platform.<\/p>\n

Xbox is reprioritizing its efforts and retiring features<\/p>\n

As part of the shift, Xbox is now retiring features that no longer fit its future plans. Sharma specifically confirmed that Copilot on mobile will begin winding down, while development for Copilot on Xbox consoles is being halted entirely.<\/p>\n

That is a pretty major change considering Microsoft had been heavily promoting Gaming Copilot over the past year. The AI-powered assistant was originally introduced as a gaming companion that could provide contextual help while playing games. The idea was that players could ask for gameplay tips, recommendations, boss strategies, or explanations without needing to leave the game.<\/p>\n

Microsoft even launched beta versions of Gaming Copilot on the Xbox mobile app, Windows 11 devices, and handhelds like the ROG Xbox Ally<\/a>. Earlier this year, during GDC 2026, Xbox had also stated that it planned to bring the feature to current-generation Xbox consoles later this year. Now, those plans are no longer happening.<\/p>\n

Is Xbox still using AI?<\/p>\n

Interestingly, the changes don\u2019t necessarily mean Xbox is abandoning AI completely. Sharma herself previously led Microsoft\u2019s CoreAI division before becoming Xbox CEO, and several new executives joining Xbox are also coming from the AI side of Microsoft. So rather than putting AI directly in front of players through something like Copilot, Xbox may instead use AI internally to improve development workflows and backend systems.<\/p>\n

Under Sharma\u2019s leadership<\/a>, Xbox has already gone through several major changes. Since taking over earlier this year, she has overseen Xbox rebranding efforts, discussed the future of exclusives, introduced changes to Game Pass pricing<\/a>, and confirmed new hardware projects like Project Helix<\/a>.<\/p>\n
