Artificial intelligence is used in healthcare in everything from diagnosis help to processing financial files. Lawmakers say transparency on some of those uses should be mandated.<\/p>\n
In a 19 to 7 vote, the House Communications & Technology Committee passed House Bill1925.<\/p>\n
The bill sets expectations for patients know when and how the artificial intelligence technology is used in their care. It also mandates that all decisions need review from a human being.<\/p>\n
Lastly, it asks health insurers or practitioners to show their artificial intelligence use mitigate and minimizes discrimination or bias that is already prohibited by state and federal law.<\/p>\n
Rep. Arvind Venkat, the bill sponsor, works as an emergency room physician. He says artificial intelligence should be used to improve care, but the faults of the technology need to be guarded against.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnlike other technologies, it purports to be close to human intelligence,\u201d Venkat said. \u201cThat\u2019s where we need new legislative guardrails because.<\/p>\n
In the committee vote, some republican lawmakers cautioned that regulation could stymy progress. Others agreed that guardrails are needed, but questioned if regulating one industry at a time was wise.<\/p>\n
