SpaceX said Wednesday it would lease its Colossus 1 artificial intelligence data center<\/a> to Anthropic, pairing Elon\u00a0Musk\u2019s company with a previously criticized rival in a deal that could add momentum to the Claude creator\u2019s AI coding push.<\/p>\n

Under the agreement<\/a>, Anthropic will use the full computing power of the facility in Memphis, Tennessee, which houses more than 220,000 Nvidia processors and will give the Claude chatbot maker 300 megawatts of new capacity within a month.<\/p>\n

The deal gives\u00a0Musk\u2019s IPO-bound SpaceX<\/a> a marquee customer as it looks to sell investors on its AI ambitions while helping Anthropic ease capacity constraints following surging demand for products such as its AI coding tool, Claude Code.<\/p>\n

The announcement came as Anthropic held a developer day in San Francisco on Wednesday, where it unveiled a new Claude AI feature called \u201cdreaming\u201d that is meant to help its AI systems learn by reviewing work between sessions, spotting patterns and updating files that store user preferences and other context.<\/p>\n

Buoyed by the extra capacity from the SpaceX deal and other similar recent agreements, Anthropic said it was doubling Claude Code\u2019s rate limits for its paid plans, removing peak-hour usage caps for Pro and Max accounts and sharply increasing the volume of requests developers can make to its Claude Opus models.<\/p>\n

The company said it is also interested in working with SpaceX to develop multiple gigawatts of space-based orbital data centers \u2013 one of\u00a0Musk\u2019s key goals and a major driver behind SpaceX\u2019s initial public offering, as the endeavor is expected to be highly capital intensive and technically challenging.<\/p>\n

Musk reverses stance on Anthropic<\/p>\n

In a statement on X,\u00a0Musk\u00a0said that he made the decision to lease computing power after spending time with Anthropic leaders last week. Their work to ensure Anthropic\u2019s Claude AI is \u201cgood for humanity\u201d impressed him, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one set off my evil detector,\u201d\u00a0wrote\u00a0Musk, who is battling OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman<\/a> in court for\u00a0allegedly\u00a0breaching its mission to develop AI for the good\u00a0of humanity.<\/p>\n

He added SpaceX has moved its AI training efforts to Colossus 2 and\u00a0that\u00a0he would provide computing capacity to other AI companies that make similar efforts to favor humanity, like how SpaceX launches satellites for competitors with \u201cfair terms and pricing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comments marked a sharp shift from remarks\u00a0Musk\u00a0made in February, when he accused Anthropic\u2019s AI of bias.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrankly, I don\u2019t think there is anything you can do to escape the inevitable irony of Anthropic ending up being misanthropic,\u201d he\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0at the time in a post on X.<\/p>\n

Anthropic\u2019s push to win enterprise customers<\/p>\n

Anthropic said on Wednesday that its \u201cdreaming\u201d feature was available as a research preview and comes with its software for managing agents, or AI programs that perform tasks with little human involvement.<\/p>\n

The move is part of Anthropic\u2019s push to win business customers, following a surge in popularity for Claude Code that has intensified competition and prompted OpenAI to scale back efforts such as its Sora video\u2011generation tool,\u00a0focusing\u00a0more heavily on the fast\u2011growing market for AI-powered\u00a0coding.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday,\u00a0Anthropic\u00a0unveiled 10 financially focused AI agents\u00a0at an event in New York, in which it said the tech sector represented its largest source of enterprise revenue, followed by financial institutions.<\/p>\n

Anthropic\u00a0also announced\u00a0wider availability for other\u00a0features on Wednesday, such as one for its AI agent to break down and delegate tasks to other, specialist agents.<\/p>\n

On stage at the\u00a0San Francisco\u00a0event, Boris Cherny, Anthropic\u2019s head of Claude Code, showed off how developers could set up \u201croutines\u201d that schedule Anthropic\u2019s AI computer programmer to take action.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe default isn\u2019t, \u2018I\u2019m going to prompt Claude Code.\u2019 The default is now, \u2018I will have Claude prompt Claude Code,’\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Cherny closed out the keynote with a message on AI\u2019s productive power. \u201cThe capability is already here.
