But finding out that your partner confided in ChatGPT<\/a> about relationship doubts? The romantic metrics are murkier.<\/p>\n

For Lindsey Hall<\/a>, a public relations professional who pens a Substack titled \u201cLindsey Hall Writes\u201d<\/a> \u2014 and wrote the recent essay \u201cI Stumbled Upon My Boyfriend\u2019s ChatGPT and It Ended Our Relationship\u201d<\/a> \u2014 this question came up when she accidentally came across her now ex-boyfriend\u2019s ChatGPT history.<\/p>\n

She recalled borrowing his laptop \u2014 as he sat beside her on his couch, sleeping \u2014 in order to respond to a client after her phone had died. On it, she found a modern-day girlfriend\u2019s nightmare \u2014 a ChatGPT chat<\/a> titled \u201cRelationship Issues and Uncertainty.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the post, Hall recalled that she \u201cstared at the words,\u201d instantly wishing she had \u201cnever read what I did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, here is where I am certain many will piously tell me I dug my own grave,\u201d Hall wrote. \u201cI invaded his privacy. That I never should\u2019ve read what I read. That the man is allowed to share private thoughts with a robot he never intended for me to see.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd of course all that is true,\u201d she continued. \u201cBut I dare you to come across your partner\u2019s ChatGPT, read those words, and not unravel all moral senses.\u201d<\/p>\n

When contacted by The Post, Hall admitted that \u201csome\u201d criticism of her actions \u201cis fair\u201d and that she \u201cdid invade his privacy, and I\u2019ve never tried to pretend otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Hall wrote that she\u2019d initially bristled \u2014 assuming that the focus would be on the chaos of her three cats, about which her ex had never been a huge fan \u2014 she froze when her eyes quickly landed on the final line of the AI bot<\/a>\u2019s analysis: \u201cFrom what you\u2019re sharing, you should consider ending the relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the thread, Hall\u2019s boyfriend had posed a series of concerns to his robot (named Freud), kicking off with the question, \u201cShould I be in love after 3.5 months?\u201d He followed with doubts about Hall\u2019s lifestyle, sensitive nature, eating disorder history, and online writing, with the trio of cats eventually making their own appearance in the chat.<\/p>\n

But to Hall, the kicker was his phrase, \u201cAnd then there\u2019s the whole attraction thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, it\u2019s not that I think I\u2019m a dime \u2014 I\u2019m a realistic lady \u2014 but this man\u2019s entire love language was rooted in physical affection,\u201d Hall wrote. \u201cIt was quite literally the only type of love I felt certain from him \u2026 I reread it over and over because I genuinely could not make my brain process.\u201d<\/p>\n

But what \u201cfloored\u201d Hall the most was that next to all the cons, there was no \u201cpro\u201d list.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the privacy of his own thoughts, I was not being held in the warm and forgiving light I had imagined \u2026Then I read the line that I think I will probably remember to my grave: \u2018I\u2019m just not proud of her.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

In the post, which to date has over 22,000 \u201clikes\u201d and topped 2,000 comments, Hall admitted that after uncovering that first AI conversation thread, she found \u2014 and read \u2014 \u201chandfuls\u201d more. Still shell-shocked, she slid out from underneath his embrace on the couch, gathered her things, and left as he remained there, snoozing.<\/p>\n

As Hall explained to The Post, \u201cWhat hurt wasn\u2019t that he had private thoughts \u2026 everyone does. It was seeing them laid out so clinically, almost like our relationship had been turned into a performance review by AI. And none of it was favorable. There was no balancing of the scales, so to speak. And I simply could not be with someone that in the chambers of their thoughts did not have one positive attribute to share when evaluating the relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the incident, after a frantic barrage of texts from her ex asking what had happened \u2014 leading to his arrival at her house a half-hour later \u2014 she spit out her discovery: \u201c\u2018I read everything \u2026 I read your whole f\u2013king ChatGPT.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Hall recalled that her \u201cstricken\u201d boyfriend, whom she clarifies to her readers was \u201ca strong man, a brilliant one too,\u201d looked \u201chorrified\u201d and \u201cinstantly ashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the pair attempted to talk out the debacle \u2014 which involved countless tears and apologies from the boyfriend, with frantic explanations that his confiding in AI was due to relationship anxiety and that he was still attracted to her \u2014 the damage was done.<\/p>\n

While Hall and her partner continued dating for a few months afterward, the relationship eventually ended.<\/p>\n

Now that an unspecified amount of time has passed, she reflected on the incident \u2014 even sharing that she does \u201cforgive\u201d him.<\/p>\n

She hopes \u2014 but does not necessarily expect \u2014 that her readers will give her the same grace in return for the invasion of privacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also think the story struck a nerve because a lot of people recognized themselves in it, whether they identified with me, with him, or with the growing tendency to process human emotions through technology instead of uncomfortable or vulnerable conversations,\u201d she told The Post. \u201cAt the end of the day, I didn\u2019t share the story to villainize him. I went to great lengths to highlight his qualities I liked in the essay. I shared it because it did genuinely change how I think about intimacy, privacy and the role AI is starting to play in relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hall \u2014 who noted in her post that \u201cwhat made it so painful was how ordinary it was\u201d \u2014 also saw a particular \u201cirony\u201d about the scenario.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople say I violated privacy by reading it,\u201d she told The Post, \u201cbut the relationship was already being emotionally outsourced to a machine that collects our data, anyhow.\u201d<\/p>\n
