Even the slightest disruption can have a direct impact on customer experience and business operations.

As a subsidiary of PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, PT BNI Multifinance (BNI finance) has been operating since 1983, continuously strengthening its position as a trusted financial partner. With a vision to become a sound financing company that excels in both service and performance, BNI finance focuses on delivering comprehensive financial solutions, particularly in providing multipurpose financing, investment, and working capital services.

BNI finance continues to expand its business footprint, now serving customers through 52 branch offices across Indonesia. This strong commitment to delivering value‑added financing solutions for both individual and corporate clients has been a key driver behind the company’s ongoing digital architecture transformation. BNI finance recognizes that the need for a robust technology foundation is becoming increasingly critical, not only to ensure smooth and reliable operations, but also to safeguard data security, maintain regulatory compliance, and support business growth as well as data‑driven innovation.

When the Core System Becomes the Backbone of the Business

For BNI finance, the core system serves as the primary foundation supporting all business processes, including the management and protection of customer data. The company’s day‑to‑day operations are powered by a multifinance core system developed by PT Adicipta Inovasi Teknologi (AdIns), a software provider whose platform is among the most widely used in Indonesia’s multifinance sector.

As transaction volumes and business complexity continue to grow, BNI finance recognized the need for a more modern, integrated digital infrastructure capable of supporting data‑driven innovation. The company therefore made a strategic decision to migrate its core system to Microsoft Azure. This decision was not driven solely by performance considerations, but also by critical factors such as data security, compliance with national financial regulations, and the availability of high‑standard, reliable services.

Azure’s robust security capabilities, ranging from advanced encryption to identity and access management through Microsoft Entra and Microsoft Defender for Cloud, give BNI finance the assurance to operate its core system on the Azure cloud platform. The availability of the Indonesia Central cloud region further strengthens this position, enabling data to remain within national borders while reducing service latency.

“This migration goes beyond a simple infrastructure shift, it represents a strategic move to establish a secure and future‑ready digital foundation that supports data‑driven and AI‑enabled innovation for sustainable business growth. The presence of a cloud region in Indonesia is equally critical, as it helps us minimize latency while ensuring data residency remains fully aligned with national regulatory requirements,” said Yudi Satriadi Thamrin, Head of IT Division at BNI finance.

Executing a Complex Data Migration Under Tight Timelines

Migrating large‑scale data is a highly complex undertaking. BNI finance’s Information Technology (IT) team was tasked with transferring more than 200 terabytes of data, over 100 application services, and numerous interconnected microservices, all within less than two months. This had to be accomplished without disrupting ongoing operations, which support an average of more than 1,000 transactions per month across 52 branch offices nationwide.

To achieve this, the team adopted a structured and methodical migration approach. They mapped the full landscape of microservices and their dependencies, established Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) for each service, and determined the most suitable migration strategies. The process included application redeployment, online database migration using the Database Migration Service (DMS), and the use of Azure Migrate to ensure a smooth and efficient transition of application data and core systems.

The migration also involved transferring critical systems and data to the Indonesia Central cloud region. Through close collaboration with PT Intikom Berlian Mustika (INTIKOM) as the technology partner, the entire process was implemented with multiple layers of security safeguards in place, ensuring uninterrupted service continuity for customers.

As a result, the migration was successfully completed within just two months, with zero data loss and no disruption to ongoing business operations. Throughout the transition, the company maintained a service performance level of over 99.5% Service Level Agreement (SLA).

Driving Transformation in the Multifinance Business

Following the successful go‑live of its core system on Microsoft Azure on January 1, 2026, BNI finance immediately began to experience tangible and measurable business impacts.

System reliability saw a significant uplift, particularly during peak transaction periods, while infrastructure management became more streamlined through centralized monitoring dashboards and automated security controls. Leveraging the advanced capabilities of Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), the modernization of critical applications has enhanced scalability, enabling the business to better support future growth and innovation.

The Azure platform has further reinforced the company’s overall security posture. By integrating services such as Microsoft Entra and Microsoft Purview, BNI finance gains end‑to‑end visibility into financial data governance while ensuring alignment with global security standards. The IT team can now respond more proactively to potential threats through automated detection and Azure Policy‑based security controls, enabling 20% faster threat detection following the migration.

In the medium term, this migration unlocks further opportunities for development, including the modernization of data analytics, expanded adoption of AI in business operations, and enhanced machine learning capabilities for credit assessment, risk evaluation, and predictive analytics.

More than a technical achievement, this successful migration positions BNI finance among financial institutions capable of operating mission‑critical workloads with local data residency, supported by the Indonesia Central cloud region.

“BNI finance’s success in running its core applications on Azure demonstrates how Microsoft delivers cloud and AI solutions with the scalability and security needed to support business transformation while unlocking future innovation opportunities. Beyond that, our collaboration with customers and partners also reinforces Microsoft’s role as a catalyst for digital transformation across Indonesia’s financial services sector,” said Fiki Setiyono, Azure Go-to-Market Lead, Microsoft ASEAN.

Microsoft Azure enables financial institutions to run critical operations with strong standards in security, risk management, and data governance, in line with requirements established by the Financial Services Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan / OJK). This commitment is reinforced through Microsoft’s comprehensive guidance, helping financial institutions adopt cloud technologies while remaining aligned with national regulatory frameworks.

Microsoft’s support for BNI finance’s digital transformation serves as a concrete example of how technology can drive innovation without compromising compliance. With a secure, compliant, and innovation‑ready technology foundation in place, the advancement of the multifinance sector in the digital era is becoming increasingly tangible.

###

Read in Indonesian here.
