OpenAI paid Microsoft roughly $23 billion for Azure server rentals between 2023 and 2025. Beyond hardware, Microsoft\u2019s sales of AI-integrated products\u2014such as Office 365 Copilot and GitHub Copilot\u2014contributed the second most to the total.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In April this year, Microsoft gave up its exclusive rights to sell OpenAI\u2019s GPT models. Ever since, OpenAI has sold more of its products compared to MSFT, according to internal financials secured by The Information.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, OpenAI\u2019s direct sales to businesses reached nearly $2 billion, while Microsoft\u2019s revenue from selling the same models through Azure grew to $1.5 billion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Musk Lawsuit And Trial Testimony<\/p>\n<p>In a federal trial in Oakland, Elon Musk is seeking $150 billion in damages from OpenAI and Microsoft. Musk alleges the companies breached OpenAI\u2019s original charitable mission by pursuing a profit-driven model.<\/p>\n<p>Testifying on Monday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella defended the partnership as a &#8220;calculated risk&#8221;. Nadella admitted to prioritizing OpenAI&#8217;s computing needs over other internal projects to create a &#8220;win-win partnership&#8221;. However, the trial has also exposed internal friction; former OpenAI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever testified to a &#8220;pattern of lying&#8221; by CEO Sam Altman, who took the stand today to firmly deny Musk&#8217;s claims.<\/p>\n<p>MSFT And OpenAI Retail View<\/p>\n<p>Retail sentiment on Stocktwits was \u2018bearish\u2019 for MSFT and \u2018bullish\u2019 for OpenAI.
