However, Microsoft reportedly backed away from acquisition talks due to concerns that a deal could face regulatory scrutiny because of its ownership of GitHub Copilot.

The company is also in discussions with Inception, a Stanford-linked startup focused on an alternative approach to large language models using diffusion-based techniques. Microsoft’s venture arm, M12, had previously invested in Inception’s $50 million seed round in late 2025.

Reuters said the talks remain ongoing and may not lead to a transaction.

Inception is reportedly seeking a valuation of more than $1 billion.

The competition for AI startups has intensified as major technology firms race to secure top talent and advanced AI technologies. SpaceX, which acquired xAI earlier this year, has also shown interest in both Cursor and Inception, the report said.

The moves reflect Microsoft’s broader effort to reduce reliance on OpenAI despite their deep partnership since 2019, when Microsoft first invested $1 billion in the AI lab. The partnership helped position Microsoft as an early AI leader following the launch of ChatGPT in 2022 and boosted growth for its Azure cloud business.

However, tensions between the two companies have grown over access to computing resources, product development restrictions and competitive ambitions. Microsoft has reportedly spent more than $100 billion on OpenAI-related investments, infrastructure and hosting costs.

The companies have since revised their agreement multiple times, including a late-2025 amendment that allows Microsoft to pursue independent development of artificial general intelligence. More recently, OpenAI secured greater flexibility to build products with Microsoft rivals such as Amazon.

Published On May 14, 2026 at 11:06 AM IST

Join the community of 2M+ industry professionals.
Subscribe to Newsletter to get latest insights & analysis in your inbox.

Get updates on your preferred social platform
Follow us for the latest news, insider access to events and more.

Inception is reportedly seeking a valuation of more than $1 billion.Microsoft is exploring acquisitions of artificial intelligence startups…

[4
6744,23807,3013,23811,23808,23810,23809,23812,8380,23806,13883,13960
0":"post-38471","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-agi","8":"tag-agi","9":"tag-ai-startups-investment","10":"tag-artificial-general-intelligence","11":"tag-artificial-general-intelligence-development","12":"tag-artificial-intelligence-competition","13":"tag-azure-cloud-growth","14":"tag-cursor-startup","15":"tag-m12-investment","16":"tag-making-ai-work","17":"tag-microsoft-ai-acquisitions","18":"tag-microsoft-ai-strategy","19":"tag-openai-partnership
["GET
