{"id":38783,"date":"2026-05-14T12:44:18","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T12:44:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/38783\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T12:44:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T12:44:18","slug":"china-ai-chips-ramp-up-as-nvidia-h200-access-unclear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/38783\/","title":{"rendered":"China AI chips ramp up as Nvidia H200 access unclear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>China is focusing on large language models in the artificial intelligence space.<\/p>\n<p>Blackdovfx | Istock | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Production of Chinese chips could ramp up this year, as executives at the country&#8217;s biggest tech companies look to deploy more homegrown technology \u2014 as it&#8217;s reported U.S. chip giant Nvidia could return.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, internet titan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/700-HK\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tencent<\/a> suggested that production of Chinese homegrown chips could ramp up this year, while e-commerce giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BABA\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alibaba<\/a> discussed how it is expanding its self-developed semiconductor usage.<\/p>\n<p>The comments underscore how, in the absence of Nvidia&#8217;s technology due to export restrictions, China has pushed its domestically developed chips in the search for self-sufficiency to power its AI ambitions. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/108306812-17787520621778752059-45930547860-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese tech companies talk up local chips as Nvidia reportedly wins approval for return\"\/><a id=\"headline0\"\/>China chip ramp<\/p>\n<p>Tencent Chief Strategy Officer James Mitchell said the company will have a &#8220;substantial increase&#8221; in capital expenditure, especially in the second half of the year, as more China-designed chips become &#8220;available to us month by month.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell also said that the supply of China-designed graphics processing units (GPUs) would &#8220;progressively&#8221; ramp up through the year. <\/p>\n<p>He also said that China-designed chips were seeing more supply from manufacturing facilities within China as well as &#8220;neighbouring countries.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>China has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/17\/metax-moore-threads-chinese-rivals-nvidia-ai-chips.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">swathe of local chip players<\/a> that have ramped up activity by going public and launching products. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/688795-SZ\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Moore Threads<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/88802-SZ\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MetaX<\/a> and Huawei are among the players trying to fill the void left by Nvidia since it was blocked from selling its chips to China more than a year ago. <\/p>\n<p>This has underpinned record revenue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/03\/chinese-chip-firms-record-revenue-ai-boom-us-curbs.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at Chinese chip companies<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/108306681-17787218301778721826-45922638068-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"Misleading headlines? Barclays' Jiong Shao on Alibaba and Tencent's earnings\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Alibaba designs its own AI chips, which it deploys in its data centers that power its cloud computing division. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;T-Head&#8217;s proprietary GPU chips have achieved scaled mass production,&#8221; an Alibaba executive said on the company&#8217;s earnings call on Wednesday. Alibaba talked up how its self-designed chips are an advantage in an environment where access to semiconductors is difficult.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In an environment of compute scarcity, this structural advantage is favorable to our revenue growth and gross margin improvement,&#8221; an executive said.<\/p>\n<p>Alibaba also signalled that it could sell servers that are equipped with its chips to companies building computing and data centers, or it could co-build those facilities with other firms, underscoring how the tech giant sees its growing role in China&#8217;s semiconductor space. <\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline1\"\/>Will Nvidia be welcomed?<\/p>\n<p>Alibaba and Tencent&#8217;s comments came a day before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/14\/us-clears-h200-chip-sales-to-10-china-firms-as-nvidia-ceo-looks-for-breakthrough.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters on Thursday<\/a> reported that the U.S. gave the green light for several Chinese firms, including Alibaba and Tencent, to buy Nvidia&#8217;s H200 chips, one of the most powerful GPUs on the market.<\/p>\n<p>However, no H200s have been made so far, Reuters added.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s still unclear whether Nvidia has indeed received the approval of the U.S. government. Asked by CNBC&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/joe-kernen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Kernen<\/a> about the report, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said: &#8220;This is news to me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know there&#8217;s been a lot of back and forth &#8230; and we&#8217;ll have to see on that. That&#8217;s a commerce department function,&#8221; Bessent added.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/108304115-17782127551778212751-45783633719-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese chip firms are trading independent of global fundamentals, specific to China: Analyst\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There have been several reports over the last year regarding Washington giving approval to Nvidia to ship certain chips, such as the less powerful H20, to China. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/08\/15\/china-not-welcoming-nvidia-back-with-open-arms-even-if-h20-curbs-eased.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">some reports in that time frame suggested<\/a> China encouraged local firms to buy domestic alternatives. <\/p>\n<p>Neil Shah, partner at Counterpoint Research, said that as Chinese firms push toward &#8220;agentic AI,&#8221; the idea of AI systems carrying out more complex tasks, they will require more advanced chips. That means Nvidia&#8217;s H200 product will be welcomed, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are seeing the Chinese AI roadmap pivot towards &#8216;domestic-only&#8217; with AI training infrastructure,&#8221; Shah told CNBC. But he added that the &#8220;race towards Agentic AI&#8221; had shifted &#8220;from training to massive inference scaling&#8221; \u2212 the process of actually running AI models that have been trained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Chinese hyperscalers simply cannot afford to wait,&#8221; Shah said, adding: &#8220;The timing is right for NVIDIA H200 to get adopted in what could be a hybrid AI inferencing infrastructure based on Chinese and U.S. chips to scale the infrastructure sooner rather than later.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Choose CNBC as your preferred source on Google and never miss a moment from the most trusted name in business news.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"China is focusing on large language models in the artificial intelligence space.
