{"id":41358,"date":"2026-05-17T01:52:24","date_gmt":"2026-05-17T01:52:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/41358\/"},"modified":"2026-05-17T01:52:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-17T01:52:24","slug":"eu-accused-of-wasting-e20b-on-ai-computing-dreams-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/41358\/","title":{"rendered":"EU accused of wasting \u20ac20B on AI computing dreams \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The aim is to build four to five mega facilities, each powered by 100,000 graphics processing units (GPUs), a type of chip used to train AI models.\u00a0They would be four times the size of the AI Factories and rival some of the world\u2019s leading projects, such as OpenAI\u2019s Stargate data center in Norway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The projects will be funded by combining public and private investment, and the EU has <a href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/news\/eu-launches-investai-initiative-mobilise-eu200-billion-investment-artificial-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">set up a \u20ac20 billion fund<\/a> to back the plans from its side.\u00a0A total of 76 bids to establish 60 sites across 16 countries were filed during an informal sense-check by the Commission last year, with established companies such as French Scaleway among them. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis demonstrates an emerging substantial market demand,\u201d the Commission&#8217;s Regnier said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/GettyImages-2208546535-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8016162\"  \/>As an early pledge, the Commission in 2024 announced plans to build 19 AI-focused supercomputers across 16 countries. | Nicolas Economou\/NurPhoto via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Efforts are ongoing to merge and finalize some of those bids and to iron out the practical details between EU countries that support the bids and the vehicle running the EU\u2019s network of supercomputers, called EuroHPC.
