By optimizing grid management and pricing real-time operational visibility, Tapestry functions like a \u201cGoogle Maps for electrons,\u201d as the project team describes it.<\/p>\n<p>Tapestry\u2019s partnership with PJM, America\u2019s largest regional transmission organization, is helping bring new generation, including renewables, online through applications like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tapestryenergy.com\/en\/projects\/how-agentic-ai-can-help-grid-operators-speed-up-interconnection\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HyperQ<\/a>, an agentic AI tool that reads through interconnection request applications to confirm that they meet all related requirements and flags any errors. These kinds of tasks normally take weeks to complete; but HyperQ analyzes the applications \u2014 some as long as 6,000 pages \u2014 in a matter of minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The collaboration comes at a crucial moment for PJM, which serves 65 million people in the mid-Atlantic and Midwest. The RTO faces a huge surge in load growth driven, in part, by data centers, and an enormous backlog of interconnection requests. As of last spring, PJM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latitudemedia.com\/news\/pjm-partners-with-googles-grid-moonshot-to-tackle-interconnection-backlogs\/#:~:text=PJM%2C%20the%20largest%20grid%20operator,power%20waiting%20in%20the%20queue.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had 200 GW of renewable power<\/a> waiting in the queue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReviewing that the applications meet these requirements is not the highest and best use of a power systems engineer\u2019s time. It\u2019s a great place for AI to go to work,\u201d said Page Crahan, general manager at Tapestry, at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latitudemedia.com\/events\/how-tapestry-is-building-an-ai-powered-intelligence-layer-for-the-grid\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent Where the Internet Lives virtual event<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Those interconnection applications aren\u2019t just long; they\u2019re nuanced. The documents must be on company letterhead, for instance, and often require real, \u201cwet\u201d signatures instead of e-signatures. They also include highly technical schematics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s incredibly complicated,\u201d Crahan said. \u201cA PhD in power systems is going to\u2026go through sometimes hundreds of pages of material from a project developer that\u2019s demonstrating they own the land, showing their project plan, explaining what they\u2019re going to build, confirming that they have financing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>AI can process all of that in a fraction of the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beyond HyperQ \u2014 which rolls out this year \u2014 Tapestry is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latitudemedia.com\/news\/pjm-partners-with-googles-grid-moonshot-to-tackle-interconnection-backlogs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bringing its unified modeling approach to PJM<\/a>. Unified modeling allows Tapestry and PJM to have precise visibility into every facet of the grid and the factors impacting it. It\u2019s an effort that requires pulling in trillions of data points \u2014 everything from weather to the condition of assets like transformers to the rate of electron transmission itself. Crahan argues that more data will improve the model further.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s getting better and better every quarter,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tapestry\u2019s data-driven innovations extend far beyond PJM. During the live event, Crahan identified two case studies in South America where Tapestry has helped countries smooth the process of adding renewable generation to the grid.<\/p>\n<p>In Chile, the government is winding down coal use as part of its plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.company\/case-study\/tapestry-cen\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">convert 70% of its total energy consumption<\/a> to renewables by 2030. As more wind and solar sources come online, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NpGA72i5u5E\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tapestry\u2019s Grid Planning Tool<\/a> allows planners to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latitudemedia.com\/news\/in-chile-google-x-is-taking-ai-powered-grid-tools-out-of-pilot-purgatory\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">create hourly models<\/a> that extend twenty years into the future to help developers plan battery installations and curtail supply when it gets too high.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re helping the operators and the developer make more informed decisions about what to do when certain nodes of the grid are producing more [energy] than we need at that time,\u201d Crahan said.<\/p>\n<p>And in Rio de Janeiro, Mayor Eduardo Paes is <a href=\"https:\/\/x.company\/blog\/posts\/moonshotsinrio\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">establishing an \u201cAI City\u201d<\/a> in the Olympic Park region. The local government, in partnership with Light SA, Axia Energia, and Elea Data Centers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latitudemedia.com\/news\/can-googles-grid-moonshot-get-data-centers-online-faster\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is working with Tapestry<\/a> to ensure the city can manage rising power demands from over two dozen new clean-energy data centers once the project is complete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re going to invest, as a species, two percent of global GDP in energy infrastructure \u2014 that\u2019s more than we invested in the railroad, that\u2019s more than we invested in the space mission \u2014 we have got to pull together and do it intelligently,\u201d Crahan said.<\/p>\n<p>This is partner content, brought to you by Google.
