WAUKON, Iowa (KCRG) – A car dealership in northeast Iowa is using a machine that scans vehicles for maintenance issues before a mechanic ever looks under the hood.<\/p>\n
Pladsen Chevrolet in Waukon installed a device that takes about 1,000 pictures as a car drives through it, then uses artificial intelligence to identify potential problems.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s AI. It takes about 1,000 pictures as it drives through and formulates all the pictures into videos,\u201d said Peter Fliandrinos with UVEye.<\/p>\n
The machine reviews the images in seconds and highlights issues that could need maintenance.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s sensors on the floor for the front and the back as well as the middle so there\u2019s about six sensors that will pick up as the car goes through with flashes on each side,\u201d Fliandrinos said.<\/p>\n
Technicians can share the information with customers immediately to make recommendations. Customers can see tread depth, tire age, undercarriage leaks and exterior dents or scratches. The reports can also be sent directly to the customers via email or printed out report.<\/p>\n
The dealership does not charge extra for the scans.<\/p>\n
UVEye has about 500 of the machines across the country, but this is the first one in Iowa.<\/p>\n
Steve Pladsen, owner of Pladsen Chevrolet, said the technology offers transparency.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a commitment we\u2019ve made. I was fortunate, my dad started this business. I was fortunate to do this new building and make the commitment to the customers, my family, the community, to put this in. I really feel the transparency of the business is really where it\u2019s going,\u201d Pladsen said.<\/p>\n
The system improves at detecting vehicle issues as it is used more frequently.<\/p>\n
