In drug discovery, where traditional development timelines can stretch beyond a decade, such systems promise to dramatically accelerate the pace of biomedical research.<\/p>\n<p data-ccp-border-top=\"0.6666666666666666px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-top=\"0px\" data-ccp-border-bottom=\"0.6666666666666666px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-bottom=\"0px\">The AlphaFold developer and the nonprofit home organization behind Edison, FutureHouse, originally introduced their respective systems, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-026-10644-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Co-Scientist<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-026-10652-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Robin<\/a>, as bioRxiv preprints in early 2025. Those studies have now been published in\u00a0Nature,\u00a0marking another step toward a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.genengnews.com\/topics\/artificial-intelligence\/can-ai-agents-automate-scientific-discovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">growing ecosystem<\/a> of specialized AI\u00a0agents\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.genengnews.com\/topics\/artificial-intelligence\/big-tech-targets-drug-discovery-with-wave-of-life-science-platforms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">for life science research<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ccp-border-top=\"0.6666666666666666px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-top=\"0px\" data-ccp-border-bottom=\"0.6666666666666666px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-bottom=\"0px\">Led by Demis Hassabis, PhD, CEO, and 2024 Nobel laureate in Chemistry, DeepMind is\u00a0no stranger\u00a0to\u00a0expanding\u00a0biomedicine. The team published a January<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-025-10014-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> Nature paper<\/a> describing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genengnews.com\/topics\/artificial-intelligence\/deepminds-alphagenome-predicts-genetic-variation-function-including-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">AlphaGenome,<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0unifying DNA sequence model for regulatory variant-effect prediction to support understanding of genome function and disease biology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ccp-border-top=\"0.6666666666666666px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-top=\"0px\" data-ccp-border-bottom=\"0.6666666666666666px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-bottom=\"0px\">Additionally, DeepMind drug discovery spinout, Isomorphic Labs, recently made waves after securing a whopping $2.1 billion Series B led by Thrive Capital, signaling the industry\u2019s growing investment in AI-driven therapeutics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ccp-border-top=\"0.6666666666666666px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-top=\"0px\">\u201cI\u2019ve always believed the No.1 application of AI should be to improve human health,\u201d wrote Hassabis on LinkedIn when announcing\u00a0Isomorphic\u2019s\u00a0blockbuster raise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DeepMind\u2019s\u00a0newly published\u00a0AI assistant,\u00a0Co-Scientist,\u00a0is a\u00a0general-purpose multi-agent system\u00a0built with\u00a0Google\u2019s Gemini and driven by natural language prompts. The platform demonstrated initial validation across\u00a0three biomedical applications: drug repurposing for acute myeloid leukemia, novel target discovery for liver fibrosis, and explaining mechanisms of anti-microbial resistance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Co-Scientist\u2019s design scales test-time compute\u00a0to iteratively reason, evolve, and improve the output as it gathers more knowledge. Researchers can also actively steer the system by refining generated ideas or providing feedback through the natural language chat.<\/p>\n<p>Vivek Natarajan, research scientist at DeepMind, emphasizes that time is a valuable commodity when tackling disease. Co-Scientist aims to support humans scientists in reaching answers to their problems much faster than before, from \u201cmonths and years to minutes and hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo realize this vision, we need to build in reliability, trustworthiness and ensure a collaborative human-AI interaction paradigm. We have done a lot of research on these aspects and we are continuing to improve,\u201d Natarajan told GEN Edge.<\/p>\n<p>Closing the loop\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ccp-border-top=\"0.6666666666666666px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-top=\"0px\">Edison is the commercial spinout of FutureHouse, an AI scientist non-profit backed by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and co-founded by Sam Rodriques, PhD, former group leader at The Francis Crick Institute and Edison\u2019s CEO. The team\u2019s newly published platform, Robin, leverages both\u00a0OpenAI o4-mini and Anthropic Claude 3.7 to aid\u00a0biological discovery.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ccp-border-top=\"0.6666666666666666px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-top=\"0px\">In research tasks, Robin proposed repurposing Ripasudil, an existing drug for treatment of glaucoma, to address dry age-related macular degeneration (dAMD) via a novel mechanism that enhanced retinal pigment epithelial cell phagocytosis. The platform also suggested a circadian clock modulator, KL001, as an unexpected treatment for dAMD, illustrating the ability to make new connections not found in existing literature. Both insights were experimentally validated in patient-derived\u00a0retinal pigment epithelium\u00a0(RPE)\u00a0cells.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ccp-border-top=\"0.6666666666666666px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-top=\"0px\">Since Robin\u2019s May 2025 preprint release, Edison unveiled an updated AI scientist, <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2511.02824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Kosmos<\/a>, last November.\u00a0Kosmos can\u00a0reason over 175\u00a0million\u00a0full-text papers,\u00a0clinical\u00a0trials\u00a0and patents, and\u00a0operate\u00a0interactively as a colleague that\u00a0can\u00a0sends\u00a0updates mid-run.\u00a0The system is reported\u00a0to perform\u00a0hundreds of research tasks in parallel to compress months of work into a single day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ccp-border-top=\"0.6666666666666666px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-top=\"0px\">Today, Edison announced a collaboration with Incyte to employ Kosmos across the global pharma\u2019s discovery and development pipeline.
